OT: Anyone here homeschool?

I posted the following on the lapband board but thought it would be a good idea to find out from other NC'rs what they do or what the requirements might be.  Thanks!

I found the "official" website for our state board of homeschooling and was reading over that.  I've ordered my transcripts so can notify the board that I plan to homeschool my son (as per the board mentioned above).

I was looking over types of curriculums that were mentioned on that site and it looked like maybe the Calvert method would fit my son best.   He is in first grade and has ADHD and while the medicine he's been on might help him settle down a little more and focus better, I hate the way he is so moody and serious on it and how it affects him coming off of it at the end of the day, plus he's always had anxiety issues at school from the ADHD (I believe).  There was an incident yesterday at school with him that I needed to get him and I don't want another school year like this.

I'm starting a new job working part time in the mornings in October so my mom and dad have voluteered to watch him in the mornings (doing activities, field trips to museums, exercise and things like that) and then I would come home and get him in the afternoons and start his lessons.  We would supplement this with maybe cubscouts or karate lessons or just meeting up with other homeschooled kids so he could get out and get some social interaction with other kids.

Another issue is when he is on his adhd medicine, he won't eat lunch at school.  He's 4'2 and 65 pounds so keeping his weight up isn't the issue, however when he doesn't eat, I'm pretty sure his bloodsugar is getting low and that's contributing to his severe mood swings along with the meds.  This way (homeschooling) he will be off the meds and home with one of my parents at lunchtime and can eat a good healthy lunch which will also help him feel better later in the day.

Well, after all of my rambling here, I guess I'm hoping to hear success stories about homeschooling and possibly feedback on which type of curriculum/program would be best and the best way to go about getting these materials, etc.

Thanks for anyone's input! :)

Hi there!  I homeschooled our children...  Our 20yo daughter and 19yo son were both homeschooled, other than a small part of elementary school.  They both graduated homeschooling and are attending a local college...daughter to become a nurse, son just switched to accounting major.  Our 15yo daughter was homeschooled until the end of her 6th grade year.  She is now a freshman in public high school.  Our 8yo son, I homeschooled for pre-K and ultimately decided to send him to K (that is the same year that our daughter chose to start attending public school, but she started at the end of the school year).  He attended K, 1, and a couple of months of 2.  I homeschooled him last year from October through May but he has gone back to public school this year.  I have officially homeschooled for 15 years and I am tired, so there will be no future option of homeschooling.  (Knock on wood!)

I can read your loving concern in your post, having your child's best interest at heart, and I commend you for that.  After reading all of your cares and concerns, I sincerely think you are on the right track!

I can relate on a large level because we custom-chose homeschooling for our children based on their personalities, learning styles, etc. and what was best for us and them.  Our oldest daughter has a form of dislexia and our oldest son had issues similar to your sons when he was younger (mood swings, anxiety, special diet to help control these issues).  Homeschooling seemed to be the best option for them both mostly for these reasons.  Thankfully somehow, as if overnight, our oldest son outgrew his problems when he went through puberty.

For most of our homeschooling years, we chose the "unschooling" approach because our children are thirsty learners.  Like me, they love to read, research, discuss, learn, so they didn't always need a super structured curriculum.  That style really worked well for us.  It may take several years of experimentation to find what suits your son AND you!

I'm sorry I don't have specifics for you as to curriculum, etc., but I do wish you and your son the very best!  Oh, I also wanted to say that I think it is wonderful that his grandparents will have a hand in helping.  That is something that's really lacking in our society (my life included).  Good luck and feel free to email me anytime!

Thank you so much for your response.  You sound like you did (and are still doing) a wonderful job with your kids! :)
