I just had sugery on the 14th.  Did anyone else find that when they first had surgery that it was hard to see how much you could really eat and choose the correct pportion size wothout wasting food.  i'm still on pureed foods, so some days i feel really hungry.  others, i feel fine.  any suggestions with this?

Unfortunately, I had to delete this message due to privacy concerns.

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!

It helps me to eat off of dessert size plates, custard cups for bowls and small glasses. I measure everything but it helps me to see it compared to the size of the dish. 2 oz of pureed food in a regular size bowl or plate is pretty pitiful looking and I think that's when head hunger comes in as well becasue even though our stomachs are full there wasn't much on hte plate.

Carla,

It's truly a learning process. Measuring your food will be a big help, but it's really going to take time. I still misjudge sometimes and I'm almost 16 months post-op. The hunger fluxuations really vary from person to person. I know some folks say that they just never got hungry and/or the only had head hunger. I had 'real' hunger from early on, but as you say it varied. I also found and still find that sometimes I seem to be able to eat more than others. I'm not sure why that is, but I do try to stay aware of what I'm eating and how much. I track what I eat on www.mydailyplate.com and that has been a big help to me in the longer run. It's helps me to see the 'value' of what I eat and how much I'm consuming. To be honest, early on and now I have to be sure that I'm eating enough; not something I would have ever thought I would need to do.

Keep measuring and tracking what you are doing. You'll find that you'll be able to get a better visual handle on what an 'appropriate' proportion is for you with time and practice.

Wishing you every success in your journey.

All the best,

Barb

Yes I had and still do have the same problem. I think ok I can eat all of this LOL wrong! I do eat off dessert plates which keeps things nice and small and still use my baby spoon when eating my yogurt so I dont woof it down. I still have a problem with eating to fast... I also have days where Im starving and then some days I fill up super fast. Its a big learning process, best of luck to you!!

Thanks everyone for your advice.  I went out to dinner to a baby shower for the first time today.  Of course I had my containers of baby food which I figured that I'd be eating since most restaurants don't serve pureed meals and it was difficult at first, but as soon as I ate, I was almost immediately full and it became a non-issue.  I was so happy about it.  But I have to say, looking at other's meals, I truly thought that I could eat all of it and I couldn't even finish what I had.  I have to say, it was amazing.  It helps me to know that I made the right choice!

One thing I learned from day one is always listen to your pouch.
When you feel full stop.
Sometimes I fill up really fast and can wait a little while and can take another bite or too.
I never try to force more than I am comfortable doing.
Yes I can look at a certain amount of food and think I can eat all that.
Nope no way no how that is my old way of eatting.
