different kind of "wow" moment

I went to one of the websites where you can log what you eat and keep track of calories.  Um... I did this at the end of a "bad" day, where I had eaten enough ice cream to sink the Titanic.  wow  .... (note, I'm pre-RNY)  if the amount of fat I ate doesn't give me a heart attack, seeing those numbers might.  The calorie and fat intake was incredibly huge.  It really gave me a clearer idea of exactly what I'm doing when I eat too much of this kind of food.

Another, different kind of "wow" was after I ate a medium frostie at Wendy's today.  It wasn't quite as bad (calorie and fat-wise) as I thought it would be, and made me realize that if I stop there, I've enjoyed a treat and haven't killed my calorie or fat count for the day.

One rule for me needs to be:  no 1/2 gallons of ice cream in the house.  I've even bought one of the ice cream makers suggested by eggface.  Do you think I should return it?  Will it do me in?

nancy, kind of blue today because it's raining, my doggie is gone, didn't sleep well, too many calories

Congratulations on logging the "bad" stuff. It is a true eye opener. I'd keep the ice cream maker and experiment with it. Since ice cream is a food you love now - it may be a food that you can load with protein after surgery and help you out. For me I can take it or leave it but if it were to become a protein donut machine then I'd have to stay away completely - I have a huge weakness for those little inner tubes.

Keep up the food journal - it'll amaze you.

Hi Nancy - I'm sorry you're having a blue day.  I do want to tell you that I wouldn't return your ice cream maker.  I use mine to make protein ice cream at least a few days a week.  For whatever reason, it takes the "protein" taste out of it for me!  You may even want to try some healthier ice cream in it now by using skim milk.  It will be a smaller amount to control your portions and it wouldn't have any fat.  You already know tThe possibilities are endless since you've been on eggface's site.

By the way, I've been to your lovely community before when we've gone to chop down our Christmas tree - so pretty!

Take care,

Rhonda

Nancy,  I've had a blue day too.  I'm blaming the rain, though I'm so thankful for it, and the Benedryl I took earlier.  Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!

Isn't it amazing what we can learn from our eating habits when we key in on all of the numbers?  At least you know you are heading in the right direction.

I think I told you that ice cream is definitely a weakness for me.  I find that when I measure it out, eat it slowly, focus on the flavor, and then give myself a bit of time afterwards for it to settle, I am completely satisfied with the smaller amount.  That's true with anything we get...hubby and I have learned to opt for the "small" portion and realize we are just as satisfied, if not more so because we don't have that "loosen the buckle and go to sleep" feeling afterwards!

I am definitely going to do the protein ice cream in the ice cream maker eventually.  I know it will be my saving grace.  If I do 2 protein shakes a day, I may end up making both of those servings into ice cream!  You don't have to add a lot of goodies in.

I don't think the protein ice cream will do you in...I think you will be singing it's praises eventually post-op!

Oh you mean there is another person in the world who can eat ice cream till they turn into a snowwoman besides me? I LOVE ice cream but it has to be sugar free or I dump in a heartbeat off of it. Sugar Free Fudgcicles are a wonderful chocolate treat good for you for starting to log your foods.. YES they are a eye opener!!

((hugs)))

I am an icecream fiend and can't bring it home because of it. When we have icecream in the house I can't stop eating it til its gone. I have one of those makers and I plan on making my shakes into protien ice cream when I have to start having three a day before surgery. That starts in two eeks...YIKES!

Nancy,

Congratulations!!!  You're on the right track!  At least you're keeping a log, a lot of people don't do it or just "forget" that they ate something and don't include it in their log (I've done this in the past).  I say keep the ice cream maker and try a couple of her recipes, I make a few of them and they're good.  They're high in protein and they're tasty!  Rex tried them and said they're not bad - and he's a ice cream JUNKIE!  If you crave ice cream then at least try to eat something that is good for you too!

Thanks everyone.  What a real encouragement!  I will keep my ice cream maker and hope I learn to be a more "normal" eater (portion-wise at least).
