Hello everyone,

Yes, I did have to put my beloved doggie boyfriend George to sleep yesterday.  What an awful week this has been.  George probably had a brain tumor of some kind, and went downhill so quickly it's hard to believe.

I had 13 years of living with him, though, and he was the most mild mannered dog you could ever know.  I loved him like I love my children, I have to say.  At the end, I took care of him the only way I knew how, by taking him to the vet to go to sleep forever.

It's not often I don't try to comfort myself with food, but I didn't want to be comforted, I think George deserves the grief I feel.  Although I did stop at a place on the way to the vet, and we shared a cup of ice cream.  He ate most of his and seemed to get some enjoyment out of it.  I also put on a pretty dress for him, too, isn't that silly?

I have 2 other dogs, but George was very first dog, and I will never forget him.

Nancy...

I'm sorry about your sweet friend.  13 years is a long time and I'm sure you have a lifetime of great stories about the two of you. By putting him to sleep is the best thing you could have done for him at that point. I could not see letting someone I loved suffer with no quality of life.  The ice cream thing and you wearing a dress is not silly, I think it was a very sweet act of love. Remember all the good times you two have shared and know that he's in a good place now and in no more pain. Take all the time you need to mourn yet don't forget to take care of YOU also.

Big hugs to you.....Nancy

I am glad to see other dog lovers out there, when I read your post I started tearing up and I was very touched. I have four dogs of my own and I consider each one of them my family. It must have been a very hard thing to do but yes I do feel it was the right thing. I could never imagine putting my dogs through any unneccesary pain or discomfort. I am so glad that you shared your story because it just lets others know that there are still kindness in the world and we need all we can get now days. Take care and may you have many wonderful days to spend with your other two.

Oh Nancy,

I am crying inside for you.  I know how hard it is to make that decision.  In the end, you know it was the right thing to do, but you still have to say good-bye to your friend.

We had to put our 1st baby Spooky to sleep in 2006.  I'm still tearing up just thinking about it.  We have 2 other dogs now, who are great, and so-well loved, but no dog will ever be able to replace her (just like you said about George.)  How are your other dogs now that he's gone?  We had Shadow when Spooky died and she moped for almost 6 months.  It was pitiful.  But one day we woke up and found her laying on Spooky's bed...she was fine from that point on.

I think it was great that you dressed up for George, and I love that you two enjoyed an ice cream together too.  Go ahead and allow yourself the time to grieve.  He was part of your family, and the saddness is natural.  Hang in there and try to focus on the happy memories...you'll always miss him, but the pain will wear with time.
