Is it ever going to stop?!

Hi Dena,

Thanks for your input and comisseration ... I haven't had anyone tell me I'm anoerxic, but I many people are telling me I'm looking too thin and I have to agree. My face and everthing else is falling. Like you, I don't want to look or feel unhealthy. At this point, I feel fine, but I feel like I look too thin. I too have started eating fuller fats trying to hold my weight, but it hasn't been working. I'm hoping that it will get better soon.

Thanks,

Barb

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!

Barb - I hope you are able to get your weight loss under control soon. I know that you are focusing on the numbers at this point and your doctors 'ideal weight' but as you mentioned, you have a lot of extra skin at this point and it's really hard to 'guess' what is the right weight for you. According the BMI scale that your following, you'd have to get down to 114 lbs to be considered underweight...that's -22 lbs from your current weight. Do you think all of your extra skin weighs this much? Can your doctor estimate the weight of your hanging skin? I know that plastic surgeons are really pretty accurate with their "guesstimates" since they deal with this problem on a daily basis. Have you consulted with a PS yet? That may be another route to get a better idea of where your weight really is. Also, have you had your body fat measured? I know that you mentioned that your going for an "analysis" but you didn't mention what type of analysis it will be? Your body fat % could give you a better idea of your health. Here is a scale I found...

Body Fat Standards for Women Recommended by Age Group

  20 to 29 30 to 39 40 to 49 50 to 59 69+
Very low <16 <17 <18 <19 <20
Low 16-19 17-20 18-21 19-22 20-23
Optimal 20-28 21-29 22-30 23-31 24-32
Moderately high 29-31 30-32 31-33 32-33 33-35
High >31 >32 >33 >34 >35

I'm sure that you know that 3,500 fewer calories need to be eaten or 3,500 more burned off in order to lose just 1 lb. Maybe getting together with your nutritionist you can figure out how many calories you "really" need to eat to maintain your weight. From what I've read, a 'normal' woman needs to eat 1,800 - 2,000 cal a day to lose weight, with your malabsorbtion from your RNY surgery it's really going to be hard to predict your calorie needs. Obviously with your continued weight loss, your not getting enough calories to maintain your weight. Your nutritionist should be your reliable educated source of information for your dire needs.
Also, you know how 'we' try to avoid the scale if we're gaining weight? Maybe you should just really concentrate on getting in enough calories and stay away from the scale for a few days? You know how our bodies love to fluctuate...
Best Wishes on getting this under control.

Wendy,

Thanks for your thoughtful response. As you may know, I'm 50 years old and on top of that I have a 'large' bone structure with a 'muscular' build, so according to my Dr and Nut, I should be at the higher end of the weight range. They said that the weight ranges have ranges to accomodate the different body types. As you can see from the table above, I'm already in the low range for my age and weight and it keeps dropping. I'd like it to be back in the optimal range.

As you mentioned, I hadn't been weighing more than once or twice a wee****il recently becaue you are right we do have a 'range' where we fluctuate, and I'm comfortable with that, but now that my size 4 slacks are feeling bigger and my turkey neck is hanging lower, I guess I'm kind of like I was when I was trying to lose, but on the opposite side of it. I keep checking with hopes that the weight loss has stabilized. I wasn't very good about staying off of the scale while I was losing and I doubt that I'll be so good about staying off of it now either.

I'll be contacting my Nut again.

Thanks again,

Barb

P.S. Congrats on your continued success.

Barb -
The table that I posted is for body fat %. Have you had that measured professionally? Your body fat % will give you a better picture of your health, which hopefully will be right on ; )

I hope your NUT will be able to advise you on the many supplements that are available for people in your position, needing to add weight. We have many resources for keeping our geriatric patients weight up in order to promote better health and skin integrity in the LTC settings.

Best Wishes!

Barbara,

I am so sorry to hear that you have not been able stay at you ideal weight.  As we get healthier and healthier, our bodies become better fuel furnaces.  I'm sure with time you will be able to find out the perfect mix for your fuel.

Have you tried adding protein bars and or shakes as snacks to your meal plan?  I know when my mother was injured during a car accident, she needed to up her calories so she could heal properly and the hospital added slim fast between meals to give her the needed calories.

Keep in mind that with your son's wedding you probably are a lot more active then you give yourself credit.  You probably have a lot more nervous energy too.

Please don't let ignorant people, keep you from posting your concerns.  This forum is for you as well as for us.  We need to continue to support each other and learn from each other.  I don't think anyone that really knows you would ever think you were "whining"!

Sending hugs your way...................Carrie
