xpost - WLS after a kidney transplant??? Anyone know of someone who has had it?

I have a dear friend who desperately needs to loose weight but she had a kidney transplant over 10 years ago.  Does anyone know of someone who has had either Lapband, RNY or any other type of weight loss surgery after having an organ transplant?

Here is an article:  Gastric Bypass Can Improve Renal Function in Patients with Morbid Obesity.  It says that, "Of these patients, 10 had gastric bypass after receiving a kidney transplant," so it's certainly possible to have it done after transplant. 

I'm seeing a lot of other information on Google now that I type a search for "Gastric Bypass After Kidney Transplant." 

I hope your friend can arm herself with all the info she needs and find a surgeon who will work with her.  She is lucky to have you as her support and advocate!

I would think that after 10 years, her health would be pretty stable and she could have WLS. She should definitely go to a bariatric program at a university hospital. They will have more experience with unusual patients and access to transplant doctors.

My mother-in-law had Lap Band surgery after having a kidney transplant.  She had a kidney transplant  in 2003, and the Lap Band in 2007. She wanted the RnY but the Dr. wouldn't give it to her because of her transplant.

Thanks for the info.  Did she do good with the lap band?  How much weight did she lose?  Any problems with her kidney afterwards? 

She has a little vomiting from time to time. No problems with her kidneys though, and her diabetes is getting better due to her weight loss. She has lost about 45 lbs so far.  Although I have to say, she has barely made an effort to exercise, and she  does not always watch what she eats (although she does eat less food overall). So I would imagine if your friend got the Lap Band end exercised, should would probably lose more and faster.
