Back to Work Soon: Help Me Plan Meals!
Friday, 8/8/08, is a big day for me. I'm going back to work for the first time since surgery and I can advance my diet to purees. I'm a really picky eater, so the pureed stage will probably look a lot like the full liquid stage with a few extras. (My nutritionist is okay with that.)
I'm working 12-hour night shifts on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday. (Geez, I'm exhausted just typing my schedule!) I usually get a 30 min meal break, but not always.
Pre-surgery, I ate a *really big* dinner before going to work. I'd have a cup of coffee around midnight. If I got a meal break, I usually took it somewhere between 2:30 AM and 4 AM. I brought a normal-size portion of something from home to eat, usually leftovers. When I got home, I took the dog out, cleaned up, had a small breakfast, and went to bed.
I'm trying to figure out what will work with my new lifestyle. I'm thinking it would be best to bring 3-4 "snacks" to eat during the night. Things like: a cup of soup, a protein shake, yogurt, applesauce, smashed up cooked carrots. I will take a quick 5-10 minute break and eat them as I get hungry throughout the night.
What do you folks think? I'm trying to make sure that I stick to my diet and that I eat enough to "fuel" my body through the craziness. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Shelli

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!
Shelli,
I am interested in these answers too since I work 12 hour shifts and don't always get much of a break to eat. And the people I work with eat all the time...hince I have joined in and gained so much weight.
I am planning on getting the lapband and go to the surgeon today and hopefully will have a date.
Now - your question - It doesn't sound like you are going to get enough protein in your plan and everyhing I have read says to eat protein first, then the veggies, fruits, etc. So I am wondering - can you take a hardboiled egg and sma**** enough - what about tuna cut or put in the blender - cottage cheese? I also have found that warm things keep me satisfied longer than cold - like V8 juice warmed in the microwave.
Look forward to hearing how work goes because I hope to be in your shoes real soon.

Shelli, Besides plenty of water (and sugar-free beverages, including V8 juice) to sip on throughout, I would probably depend on protein shakes as well. For a real meal break I'd probably do a pureed cream soup to get some real food. Could add some pudding or yogurt anytime. The protein shakes are priceless if you ask me...and I've not even done a WLS diet yet!
