Counselor
Today at 4 p.m. I am meeting with a counselor for the first time. I am hoping that she will help me with some of the stress I am having. I am very depressed with my only chlld who is leaving for college in a couple of weeks. Also, sometimes I feel like I self-sabatoge myself and I don't know why I do this to myself. I am hoping she will help.
Has anyone has experience with a counselor and did it help you to get back on track?

Barbara,
Huglets to you as your daughter prepares to head off to college. It's really hard for people who haven't been through this to know the grief that comes with what people often jokingly call "empty-nest syndrome." That phrase can't even come close to how it feels. I'm glad you're going to talk with someone who probably does know the range of emotions we can go through at such times.
I have the most wonderful therapist in the world. I've been seeing her for eight years now, after being referred to her by an employee assistance program when a supervisor had an emotional breakdown and attacked me at the office. Eight years sounds like a really long time, but I have lifelong issues with depression, and she's been on top of my med needs and also coordinates closely with my medical docs. She's been incredible in helping me get through the identity crisis that can come with empty nest PLUS weight-loss surgery issues. She's second to none, I tell you!
My own "baby" daughter left for college three years ago, and in 2007 she went overseas for a study-abroad year. My therapist was awesome in helping me get through the searing ache of loss and the sudden crush of being "Kim" instead of being "Mom." I had so much self-doubt and was feeling totally adrift. But my therapist was my rock throughout. And a couple weeks ago, my "baby" daughter came with me to therapy and I was so proud for the two of them to meet one another. They're both key members of my team.
There are some great counselors out there! But if you feel that you aren't connecting with your first counselor, don't fret about seeing someone else instead. As with any profession, counseling/therapy has some good eggs and some bad ones. Trust your gut to tell you whether it's a good fit.
Good luck, and best wishes.
