Fish and Protein

Okay I have a food question for all of you.  I started using myfooddiary.com to keep track of my protein and water intake.  I want to make sure that I am getting what I need because I have noticed that the weight just falls off if I get it all in.  Just from yesterday to today I lost 2 more pounds.  Not sure why I picked myfooddiary I was searching for another one and ended up with this one.  Well, I have started eating fish for breakfast.  I normally cook it the night before and eat it also for breakfast or cook it at breakfast and fini**** for lunch.  I have realy found that fresh fish taste so much better than canned fish.  Tuna is so different fresh.  So yesterday i ate alaskan king crab legs for breakfast.  It ended up being one leg.  This program says that is 25 grams of protein.  Seemed ok.  Today i steamed some alaskan halibut.  OMG it was so good.  I put in that I ate .5 of a fillet, it is saying that 1/2 of the fillet is 42.5 grams of protein.  Hmmm does that seem right to anyone?  That seems like a lot of protein for about 2.5 ounces of fish.  Will some one check this out on their program.  If it is wrong I will change programs.  I do have to admit the weight is falling off with me making fish my staple food.  It amazes me how much I love it.  Pre-op I only ate fish 4 times a year.  Now I'm eating it three times a day.  Thanks for your help.

I look up nutritional values on CalorieKing.com, Gretchen.  It says 2.5 oz. cooked weight is 18.9g protein.  2.5 oz. raw weight is 14.8g protein.  I didn't have much success with any online journal place so I'm using a notebook and CalorieKing when I need it.  It's amazing how much more successfully the weight drops off when you keep accountable, isn't it?  Good luck!

Hi Gretchen
I've never eaten fresh fish before...How do you prepare it?  Can you dip it in anything, like tartar sauce or something?  If I've never really had it, can you suggest a mild fish (one without too much fishy smell)???

Hi Michele,

Fresh fish is great.  I grew up in Alaska and had it there a lot.  Now I live by the beach and still get it.  There are so many ways to fix it.  This morning I just put a little water in a pain with spices and tsp of olive oil.  I just let it cook about 5-7 minutes on each side.  When the water ran out I added a little more.  It was so good.  It was flakey.  Hmm Making myself hungry talking about it.  Fresh fish shouldn't smell fishy.  I normally go with whatever white fish is fresh.  Tuna is wonderful fresh.  It doesn't even smell like tuna.

I can't stand canned tuna (the smell, gag!) but I love fresh tuna!

It sounds to me like your program isn't calculating the correct number of oz.  I typically count fish as about 7 gms protein per ounce (cooked).

I know that fish is really high in protein but I don't know specifics on grams.  Sorry I can't help you there.  Just wanted to ask a question though.  I think I read somewhere a while back that while eating fish is good for you, you shouldn't eat it more than like 2-3 times a week due to the high mercury content in it.  Something about it can cause some type of poisoning in your blood or something.  The article was about a lady who was eating fish for several meals a week and when she went to the doctor for a check up they did blood work and found high levels of mercury in her system.  Anyone know if there is any truth to this?    Kind of scary if it is true and I thought I'd just give you a heads up on this.

Thank you for the reminder.  Honestly I am not too worried about it right now.  I will keep in in mind as time goes on.  I really don't think at 2ounces  at a time that I am consuming very much.

Hey!

Check out this website. It is great!! You can use different measurements.  Everything is also measured in grams.  Weight wise 28.47 grams = 1 oz.  This the one I use and then I just plug it all in an Excel Worksheet that I have set up formulas and it keeps track of everything for me.  Easy!

i was thinking the same thing about the mercury.   its not good to eat too much.  my mom works in the medical field in Florida.. right on the coast where we have alot of seafood restaurants and my mom said she has seen sooooooooooooo many people with the mercury problem in their blood.  just be careful!  hopefully it does make a difference that u are eatting little amounts.
Congrats on ur weight loss this far!  ur doing amazing!

From my Nut:

All cooked meet you can average 7g of protein per 1 oz.  So if you only eat 1oz of crab, you only ate 7g of protein.  There are 16oz in a pound.  So if you weigh the item and it is .5 that's 1/2 a lb.  That would be 8oz x 7 = 56g of protein.

Fish is really light, so while it looks like a "big piece of fish" you are able to eat it versus say the same size steak. Because steak is so much more dense, the size of the steak will weigh more than the same size fish.
