someone PLEASE calm me down- im soooo mad !!!
Because CPAP is continuous positive airway pressure and could potentially force too much air into the newly created pouch and cause damage.
Our patients with a history of sleep apnea wear oxygen at night and also wear continuous pulse oximeters throughout their stay so that we always know what their oxygen levels are and the alarm will sound if their levels drop. There is no need for the CPAP as long as we are monitoring like this.
Our lap band patients go home after their procedures once they're stable and swallowing is cleared, so I don't really know how soon he returns them to their CPAP use or if there is an issue with that at all. Our RNY patients always stay one to two nights, mostly two but Dr. Bauman did recently discharge one that was doing exceptionally well after a one-night stay, and they are prohibited from CPAP use for a few weeks.

I'm new here, just reading and saw this. I'm working through Duke Weight Loss Surgical Center, do not even KNOW who my surgeon would be -- just selected the first one from Durham I saw in the drop down list when I registered here.
I have been told, and it is in the printed literature, that if you are put on C-Pap and do NOT come with your machine to the hospital when it is your surgical date, they will NOT give you the surgery.
Hearing that C-Pap is bad during these crucial few days and that it can cause pouch issues is unnerving, to say the least.
First chance I get, I'm going to ask the DWLSC folks about this. Thanks!

All of this is so interesting...I was diagnosed with Moderate Sleep Apnea during pre-op but my surgeon does not want me using it now (frankly, I never really did because I always felt like I was suffocating). My surgeon says that it puts air in your pouch and I was told not to bring it to the hospital. He said only rare cases with severe apnea would tthey want them to bring it. I guess all doctors are different. Don't you wish they could all get on the same page?

I'm glad that they had an opening and could fit you in. That's great news! I guess it's just another hoop to jump through before surgery. Maybe it's a CYA kind of thing???

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!
