Post-Op Driving and Regular Vitamins (not chewable)
I have a couple of questions...
How soon after RNY are you allowed to drive (say, picking up the little man from school)? Does this vary on whether you have lap or open surgery?
Also, can an RNY swallow a regular multi-vitamin and calcium tablet immediately or do they have to start with chewables? (I prefer Source Naturals Mega-One Multiple and they do have a calcium citrate/malate tablet, so I hope I can swallow them. They do have a sublingual B-12.)
Thank you!

Good questions!
I drove to the grocery store about a week after I got home, when I was no longer taking pain meds.
I'm sure if you have open, you will not be driving for at least a couple weeks. Lap, much sooner.
All the programs I'm familiar with and the books I have read say only chewable vitamins and supplements. Most vitamins are way too big for your pouch to handle. I had to either chop up my meds in tiny pieces or crush them. Thank God I came off all my prescription meds within about a month.

I had a LapBand, so my situation isn't the same. Even so, I used a pillcrusher for many weeks after surgery for pills that I couldn't have the pharmacy convert to chewables. And whenever I have an adjustment, I go back to the pillcrusher.
I do chewable vitamins. Bariatric Advantage has an awesome vitamin pack that's good for 90 days for only $120 for all of the following:

I had to do chewable to 1 month post-op. Then I switched to the capsule, but I hated them. So almost 21/2 years later I still take the chewables.
I use building blocks. They even have a chewable iron that taste good. I'm grateful for that as I have to take triple the amount of iron secondary to my anemia.
You can drive when you are off pain meds. It just not safe while taking pain meds.
