Where in the world has Kim been?
Alright, so I've been MIA for several weeks now. It's been a totally, totally crazy month, with rollercoaster rides galore.
You can rest assured that I myself am 100% fine by seeing me on MSNBC television via this YouTube link (I'm about 1:15 minutes into the video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGkFx9_ZISg. Yes, I'm alive and well.
My US Navy veteran daughter, who was deployed three times to the Gulf, has been having difficulties (third suicide attempt in a few months). So I've had my granddaughter for the past many weeks and have had lots to work out in terms of coordinated care for my daughter and grandchildren. But we're going to get through this, I guarantee it.
LapBand-wise, I'm doing fine. Just had my six-month check and am right on track, with 55 pounds lost so far. Not the best in the world -- won't be on any LapBand Best Results commercials anytime soon -- but slow and steady wins the race, eh? And there are MUCH better measures than scales: I feel good, I have oodles of energy compared to a couple months ago (huge fibromyalgia flareup!), I didn't have to use a seatbelt extender on the plane to the blogging convention in Texas last week, I'm VERY close to being off hypertension meds, my asthma is much better, and I'm riding bike to my second job on a regular basis.
And I've been nominated to be a speaker about health care and veterans' care at the Democratic National Convention in Denver! I'll find out in a couple of weeks whether I'm selected, but you know that I would never have been able to even consider being involved (much less travel to be a speaker) if I hadn't grabbed the bull by the horns and had this surgery. OR if I hadn't kept reading the wit and wisdom of people who've been through it all and then some!
I would never have been able to get through the past few weeks with my daughter and grandchildren if I hadn't had WLS surgery. Never. I was nowhere near healthy enough to do this. I'm just really glad that I had the surgery and have come to know this incredible OH crowd of friends and role models.

Hi Kim,
I'm glad to hear that you're doing so well. I think 55 pounds is great, and definitely a lot to be proud of, not to mention the NSVs (Non Scale Victory) that you mentioned.
I'm really sorry your daughter is going through such a rough time. I hope she's getting the help that she needs, I'm sure it's a huge relief for all involved that you are able to help with her daughter, not to mention coordinating care.
Keep up the good work, oh and nice interview! ;)

Deb, you and your hubby look like rock stars in that avatar photo! I'm so glad he's home. I bet you haven't stopped smiling even one moment.
Thanks for the support wishes. I've found some good resources, it's just a matter of encouraging her to be consistently compliant. She was institutionalized twice in the past two months, and she KNOWS that's not what she wants, but she is having a tough time sticking with her treatment plan. I wish sooooooooooo much that I could run this race for her, but all I can do is be on the sidelines cheering her on and providing whatever she needs to get to the next stop.

I've heard a lot about these battles of our Gulf veterans once they are home and I am so sorry to hear your daughter is waging one of her own. {{{Hugs}}} Very glad that you are feeling optimistic that ya'll WILL get through it and that WLS has helped so much in that respect.
Very nice interview. That is wonderful that you were able to attend sans seatbelt extender on the plane. Woohoo! Congratulations also on your speaking nomination at the convention in Denver. LOVE your topic! Wish I could be there.
My thoughts are with your family!
Hi, Shauna!
Nice to meet you as well. Hope you're enjoying this forum as much as so many of us do. It's an amazing group of people and I cannot believe my luck to have found this site.
I know there are many families going through what ours is -- and many who are going through much more. We're all doing what we can to make the lives of our servicemen and servicewomen better, I know that. I truly believe we can make a difference through our day-to-day efforts. Even just being aware of the problems is part of the solution.
Best of luck to you on your WLS journey! You're in good hands here, which you've no doubt realized!

Glad to see you againg Kim! always enjoy you and your fun, upbeat attitude. I am very sorry about your daughter, I spent 7 months in the Gulf and hubby is currently deployed till February 2009. I hope she is getting all the care she DESERVES. Great job on your weight loss, it sounds like it has helped you and having a lot of energy always is a fantastic thing!! Best of luck to you and your family during this time.

Thank you, Darcie! You're such a sweetie.
((( GOOD LUCK ))) to your hubby and to you as well. Hope he's home very soon and that the two of you are together on the same continent again for a long and wildly happy time!
I know things will pan out eventually for my daughter. We love her so much and will hang in there for as long as it takes.
