Surgery Friday and I'm very scared!!!

For those of you who have had surgery...where is the pain after surgery...the only surgeries I've had were two c-sections and the pain wasn't so bad.  I mean it hurt where the incision was, but the part that hurt the most was where they cut my stomach muscles.  What hurts with RNY?  Is it the incision sites or inside your stomach where they rearranged things?  Does it feel different to take a drink for the first time?  Was there any pain when they made you sip for the first time?  Stupid questions huh?  I can tolerate A LOT of pain, just not sure what to compare it to???
Can you all please say a little prayer for me on Friday at 1:00pm?  I would really appreciate it!

Thanks so much for your words of encouragement.  My last c-section (9/07)  was terrible (not pain, just a mess), but I managed to get discharged within 24 hours because I'm baby was transferred to another hospital on a respirator.  Then the c-section never healed and had to be cut all back open in June 2008 (9 months later).  I figure if I can get my a$$ up and out and driving with a c-section within 24 hours then I should be able to do this, right?

You can do this, Michele!  Honestly, the pain was pretty bad for me, but I feel that if they'd listened to me and given me what I needed for pain, it never would have been that bad.  The pain is a deep, muscular pain, where they're doing all the rearranging and such.  The incisions don't hurt much at all.  I had some mid back pain and right side pain.  If you can tolerate a lot of pain, you'll be okay....because I can NOT tolerate pain well at all and I survived!  And now with my magic pain pills, I'm just dandy.

Funny, I have not had any discomfort at all with sipping/swallowing, and I'm really trying to keep it slow...I have a hard time b/c I'm so thirsty.  Maybe being tolerant of foods now is the payoff for being dealt a bad hand in the pain dept! LOL!

Just don't let yourself get too backed up in pain,,,take the pain meds as soon as they'll let you.

I'm not far from Stallings...I live in Western Anson county, so if you need somebody, I can be there pretty quickly!

((((HUGS))) and hang in there!  You'll do great!

Thanks so much!!!  I'm glad I at least know "where" the pain is...You really aren't that far from me at all.  I'm so glad you found the pain meds that work for you.  Can you have pureed foods?  What are you eating or should I say drinking?  Can you tolerate protein shakes?  Are you able to get up and around yet?  I'm wishing you fast and problem-free recovery!!!  Again, THANK YOU!!!

The pain for me was on my right side where my blake darin was. But it only bothered me for 2 days and after that it was only soreness.

Drinking does not hurt or really feel different. Eating feels the same except for now fullness feels like very mild pressure between or just below my breast. Hunger causes my to feel nauseous. So then I know I really need to eat. But if I eat small amounts every 3 hours no problem.

just be sure and drink--sip, sip, sip and move as much as possible.

You'll do great.

sorry i misspelled it is blake drain. or it is also called a jp drain. My Dr. places a drain in for 2 weeks and you have to drink blue powerade. If any blue appears in the drain you have a leak.

I had some muscle pain at the incision site, particularly the left side.  That's where the camera goes in, it's the biggest incision.  There was also decent pain from the gas they used to distend my stomach.  That is to make it easier for the instruments to move around in there, they essentially blow you up like a balloon.  I had discomfort where some of the gas was lodged.  I just had to keep moving and wait for it to dissipate.

What another poster has already said is very important.  You need to concentrate on sipping and walking your first week or so.  The liquids are important for hydration/nutrition.  The walking, while painful, will greatly reduce the severity and amount of time you are in more acute pain.  Short term it hurts to get up and down but long term it will decrease the amount of time you spend in pain.

Take care and good luck.  We will pray for you on Friday.
Ellen
