Shonda,

Welcome to the NC boards!!!   This is a very supportive group as I'm sure you have seen...   Check out some of the profiles and you'll see that you're not much different than us, some of us are a bit older but we've all been where you are now.  Remember you are having WLS for you, for your health, not for anybody else.  You may be surprized and your family/friends may support your decision.  I know I was worried about telling my family and friends also but they've been VERY supportive.  I live in the Richlands/Jacksonville area but I'm in Wilmington often (it's only 45 minutes from me going the back way)...  Anyway, if you have ANY questions feel free to PM me or just ask, we're full of answers and lots of love and support!!!!!  Go talk with your PCP girl!

Hey Shonda!

Welcome to the board and taking the first step towards getting to a newer, fitter, healthier you!  I would first call your insurance company and find out if they cover WLS and what type, what doctor you are allowed to go to, and what the requirements are.  Within your living area, there are two WLS doctors in Wilmington, none in Jacksonville, and several in Greenville. Research all and find one that YOU like.

Please think about taking the drive up to Jacksonville for our little get-together.  Also, there is a support group located in Wilmington that I'm sure someone will post the info.

Whatever you choose, best of luck on your journey....come back and keep us posted on your progress!

Band to DS

Unfortunately, I had to delete this post due to privacy concerns.

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!

Shonda,

Your story touched me because I too was overweight as a teen and when I graduated high school I was almost 200 lbs and wore a size 20.  I am now 38 years old and wear a 26.  I wish I had the courage years ago to have this surgery.  I applaud you for seeing in yourself the need to take action now.  Your family needs to understand that this is not the "easy" way out.  It is drastic, however, you have to take back your life.  I had to tell myself that even if I never ate another sweet or bag of chips in my life, I would rather be a healthy size and alive than indulge and be dead way too soon!  Good Luck to you and again....you have your whole life ahead of you.  Even if your folks or friends don't agree, you are the master of you own desiny.  Do what you think is right!  I finally am.
