OT: Reasons Why I am insane
We live in NC, my Husband's grandmother lives in Chicago. Total Distance equals 1,100 miles, she has been sick and we decided to go up for the weekend.
We left at 2 on Friday and got back at 10 Sunday.
This is how we have spent the last 56 hours:
30 hours were spent driving
(2 hours spent arguing over how cruise control works and whether I was operating it correctly)
(1 hour listening to my Husband make up songs about our cats and sing them at the top of his lungs)
(9 hours listening to my Husband snore)
(20 minutes pulled over on the side of the road while my Husband got a speeding ticket)
(1 hour trying to convince my Husband that he did not need to read a 3ft by 2ft map while I was trying to drive through the mountains just to ensure that the directions given to us by the two separate GPS devices he insisted on bringing were correct)
(1 hour answering questions about the sections of the book on tape my Husband missed while doing the aforementioned snoring)
20 minutes listening to my Husband confirm the directions with my father and his father, even after confirming them with the map and two separate GPS devices
1 hour answering questions about the condition of the car (how was my tire pressure, when was my last oil change, did we have enough gas, how much windsheild washer fluid did I have left, did I have a spare tire, did I get the tires rotated before I left (he stopped when I threatened to jump out of the car and roll down the Blue Ridge Mountains)
1 hour discussing the itinerary
I spent the remaining time praying he would just go back to sleep!
15 hours spent sleeping
4 hours spent eating
1 hour buying flowers and a gift for his grandmother
6 hours visiting with family
I think we are done with road trips for a while.

Been there, done that, big time! In both 1989 and 2000 my husband and I took 6 months and travelled around the country. The first time pulling a 35 foot fifth wheel and both of us driving. The second time pulling a 17 foot trailer and me doing all of the driving. There is nothing like a road trip to cement a relationship. This was before GPS and soaring gas prices. My husband HATES reading a map. As a matter of fact, if we were unsure of a route he would shove the dang thing in front of me and say "I'm not a navigator!" I'd have to pull over somewhere. I could never sleep when he drove, but he has no trouble snoring away when I am driving. Usually waking up to say "I've gotta pee!" and that means find a place NOW! We also drove here from OR in 2005, and 2 years ago my son and his family and I took a quick 4 day trip to South Texas to visit my ailing Dad - 48 hours of that was drive time! I could write a book!
My DH and I drove here from the Portland OR area in December 2006 with his bird, and my two chihuahuas in our ford Focus. We were moving here for his job here in Greensboro. It was crowded in that car because there were certain things my husband did not trust to the movers so we squeezed the pets around the stuff we brought along in the car. It was fortunate that the chis are small and they kind of traveled on top of the things in the seat that were under a tarp. We had to stop at every other rest stop for them (they have small bladders) to walk them and some of the places we had to stop had foot deep snow for them to navigate through. We made a stop for a few days in Oklahoma to visit my daughter and her family along the way so we chose the Southern route also to avoid the bad weather on the central route.

LOL....ROFL.....Our husbands all sound the same. You poor thing..you couldn't escape! And my husband has the nerve to ask me why we sit in seperate rooms to watch TV. #1 he has to give editorials on everything and we miss half of the program and #2 we like different programs.
Glad you both made it back alive and you are not wanted for MURDER!
Take care, Pam
