Ericka......
Welcome to the NC board! Glad you've found us and reached out. I, too, was a "fat but fit" person for most of my adult life. Eventually it does cause "wear and tear" on your body, and it can come in so many forms. I developed high blood pressure, chlorestol, have 2 torn discs in my back, along with a very negative self image........all largely due to being fat. Each diet I would loose only to gain more. I eventually got to where I was so tired of being physically and emotionally tired, having hips and knees hurt and not being able to climb stairs frontwards, that I looked into, and was able to have surgery. It is the BEST thing I have ever done for myself. It is worth every penny and moment of apprehension. It WILL change your life. I would do it again tenfold. The only regret is I had not done this sooner in life, when I was younger so I could enjoy more time being healthy, fit, and looking better in the mirror!
Your Doctor is the best (yes, he's mine too, lol). His practice is a COE (center of excellence). Everything they do is handled efficiently, timely and professionally. The whole staff is so friendly and compassionate, I couldn't have asked for better. You will love Dr. B. Dr. P is also great they say, but I have never been seen by him. Either way, you are getting a great doctor. Whichever surgery you are persuing, research all you can and become familiar with it- they want to hear you've done your homework and have basic knowledge.
We all worry able beating it psychologically, but it IS easier to do when you can't eat so much anymore. You really aren't as interested in food. It's understandable to be worried about this,, but please think positive- YOU CAN DO IT!
Keep us posted and we're here for any and all questions, nothing is too dumb or silly to ask here! Good luck!

Hi Ericka,
Welcome to the boards! It has been 3 months since I had my Lap RNY, and I have lost 65 pounds. HOWEVER, that is not the best part. The best part is that I feel like I have regained control of my life. I exercised before the surgery, but never really enjoyed it because I knew that dinner at On The Border would negate my hard work ~ and I lived with constant guilt about my eating. The guilt-free living and knowing that every minute of exercising is actually working has made my decision to have this surgery the best one I've ever made. I've never felt better!
Good luck with your decision, and let us know if we can help in any way! Laura

Erika - Welcome! Know that you are not alone and we all go through the period of "being scared". I never had surgery before my Lap Band and was terrified of never waking up. While complications from any surgery are very real, you have to make the informed decision that could very well actually save your life. Explore all of your WLS options before deciding on which type of surgery is right for you.
Best Wishes!

Ericka, I've also thought about gastric bypass for years, especially the past 5, but fear also prevented me from looking into it *seriously*. I kept telling myself that I could lose the weight, didn't need to take such drastic measures. Well, it's 5 years later, the past 20 years of my life I have basically lost to obesity, and I am now ready to say, "I can't do it on my own!" Thankfully WLS has come a long way and that has enabled me to not be nearly as scared as I used to be about it. I don't have comorbities, and I consider myself to be pretty healthy. I just suffer from a lot of aches, pains, and embarressments that I know signifigant weightloss will help tremendously! I am now waiting for my first visits to Hickory at the end of August/first of September.
Like everyone has said, this is a very personal decision that only you can make for yourself, but we are here to support you every step of the way!

Wow! Thanks for all your words of encouragement and support. I'm actually very excited to see where this takes me and I'm anxious to hear from the doctor about an appointment. I talked to my husband about it yesterday on a serious level and he's not thrilled but said it was my decision to make. Let's hope he gets on the support train lol!
For those of you who went to Dr. Bauman and Pirello, how far out was scheduling for the procedure? I graduate the first week in Dec, but I won't go to wor****il late Jan. So I'm hoping that I could plan the surgery to happen then. 6 weeks is enough recovery time, right?
Anybody have experience with Medcost Preferred? As far as diet history, how documented does that need to be? Would you consider Medcost easy or a pain in the rear to work with?
Lastly, I've seen multiple posts about testing. What kind of testing will I need? I had a physical last week with a ton of blood work. What else do I need to look into?
Thank you again for your advice and support!

Little update...
I heard from Dr. Bauman's office and was given all the info for the insurance company. So I called Medcost and gave them the info and it looks like my total OOP will be 3,000. I don't think thats bad at all. Medcost apparently doesn't require that much info because she (insurance rep)said based on my BMI, age, etc. I will be approved. They just need the Dr's office to send the paperwork in.
I hope this is going to be as logistically easy as she made it sound and I'm not getting my hopes up for nothing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
