Hey y'all! Was just wondering what kind of iron supplements you are taking post op??
I haven't been taking iron, because i have not had my period in over 3 1/2 years (because of the excess weight, I believe) WELL last month, she decided to stop by and say hello...LOL and this month too!! Dr. Pender said that I will need to start taking iron supplements once she arrives and she has now that i have lost a lot of weight! I looked at Wal Mart and was lost, cuz i honestly didn't have a clue what to get...extended release, tiny pill, capsule..etc...
Thanks bunches
JAMI

If your gastric bypass you never want anything extended release. it doesn't stay in our systems. Not any type of meds. my doc told me never - ever.

the best are chewable or liquid to be able to be absorbed by your system.  Never take it with anything calcium though. Calcium overrides iron and it won't be absorbed. They need to be taken 2 hours apart at bare minimum.

Each doctor is different, but your the first person who I've seen that wasn't told to take Iron off the bat. There coud be more though.

I take Building Block chewable vitamins personally. I take the liquid multi-vitamin, orange chewable calcium in the mornings and evenings and I take the chewable iron at lunch.

Some people don't like these because they are too chalky to them. I don't have a problem with that.  BUt I get a 3 months supply for 95.00... which works out fairly normal even if I was buying them separate at walmart or something.  But if I get them this way, I can claim them on my FLex Medical Spending account. Which is nice - tax free

I have no idea Jamie as my doc never told me to take iron and even tho i am older than dirt, i still get that bugger visitor.   Wish she would just take a hike and never return.

Take care, Pam

The only iron I take is included in my miltivitamins. I am sure most any iron would suffice but am sure some people on here will have some suggestions.

Jami,

Hey girl!  You're doing great!!!  I don't take any extra iron, just what's in my multiple (but it says it has extra iron in it).  I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago but I still take it.  I'm gald things are "regulating" for you...  But even more glad it's not me... lol!  (oops, sorry that was bad!)

Iron is either your enemy or your friend.

Ferrous sulfate, which is the most readily available iron on the market, is pure evil packaged in green little pills.

Iron glucanate (sp) is a bit better and can be found at Vitamin World.  GNC don't carry it (at least the two I visited didn't).

Vitron C is generally touted as easy on the tum tum and is at Rite Aid and some HT's.

Carbonyl iron (the iron I take) doesn't cause stomach upset or constipation.  It's the easiest for our bodies to digest (with the glucanate (sp) the next best) so you can take less in the long run.  My target orders it for me.. 200 25mg tabs for $5.  I saw the same bottle at Rite Aid for $7 on the shelf, though.

Whichever iron you take, avoid taking it with calcium or whole grains.  It doesn't play well with others.  It however loves vitamin C.. so either take it with some OJ or a vit c pill.

Hey Jami,
Well I tried the liquid Iron you get behind the pharmacy counter.  It is nasty and you have to watch staining your teeth.  But I did find Flinstons with Iron on the bottom shelf to walmart in Morehead.  Not near as bad.  Do two a day and my levels have been fine.

I had to start taking an iron supplement after my sixth month blood work. I chose the one from bariactric advantage. The chewable pills are quite yummy.
