Can you take pills after surgery?  (ex.  tylenol, advil, etc.)

Is alka selzter plus cold medicine out of the question? (that stuff is awesome)

No - you will not be able to take most things after surgery especially NSAIDS.  They cause ulcers and many other products can too, including Prescription NSAIDS.

Look online because this is critical after surgery you won't be able to reach into the medicine cabinet and take something.

You have several questions in one.  I'm also going to make an assumption that we are talking about RNY.  I know banders have to watch certain meds, too, but I think they also have a no-no list.

Yes, you can take pills after surgery.  It may take a bit for certain pills, but you will not be on liquids or chewables for the rest of your life.

No, you cannot just take anything.  NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflamatories) are drugs you will be staying away from.  There are *few* exceptions to this rule (like aspirin therapy closely monitored in case of stroke.. but unless it is *needed* you need to stay away from it).  Advil and aspirin are tops on this list of no-no's post-op.

AlkaSeltzer is a no-no as it is 1) carbonated, and 2) contains an NSAID.  The +cold portion is fine, though (ie. phenlyepherine, or whatever).

Yes I will be having a RNY.

I am contemplating life without advil.  It is my miracle cure.  I'm assuming my surgeon is going to make me aware of all these things when I meet with him.

Learn to like Tylenol.

Your doctor will give you a list of what is acceptable to take, most likely.

Take care.
