Medicines after surgery
You have several questions in one. I'm also going to make an assumption that we are talking about RNY. I know banders have to watch certain meds, too, but I think they also have a no-no list.
Yes, you can take pills after surgery. It may take a bit for certain pills, but you will not be on liquids or chewables for the rest of your life.
No, you cannot just take anything. NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflamatories) are drugs you will be staying away from. There are *few* exceptions to this rule (like aspirin therapy closely monitored in case of stroke.. but unless it is *needed* you need to stay away from it). Advil and aspirin are tops on this list of no-no's post-op.
AlkaSeltzer is a no-no as it is 1) carbonated, and 2) contains an NSAID. The +cold portion is fine, though (ie. phenlyepherine, or whatever).
