Dumb Question

Hi my lovelies. I have a dumb question. Okay I can eat mostly anything now. Except for 6 month limitation, (only 2 1/2 months away) anyway, I will start to eat, and then by the end of chewing I am tired of chewing so much, and want to just say forget it. Is there ever a time when you can swallow almost normal size food, or even close to it. Or do I still need to chew until its like the consistency of baby food!!!!

Hey girl!
There is NO dumb question!!! Im almost 10 months out and still have to take small bites, if I dont chew it up good I pay for it later, I dont have to make it into a liquid but I really have to have meats ect really chewed well I KNOW its a pain, trust me my biggest problem I have is still eating WAY to fast and not chewing well.

Hugs

You really always want to chew well - while I dont feel its necessary to chew to baby food consistnacy you should still be chewing it up - there are a few reasons - first we should be eating slowly - part of eating slowly is chewing, another is you should be enjoying your food - (also a part of eating slowly!) and not just shoveling it in... lastly is you do not want to stretch your stoma.. dont want big ole chunkies of food going thru.
I just basically chew to mush, not liquidy but moosh... certain things (slider foods, already mushy foods) you really dont need to chew that well... but anything bulky/with mass I would keep chewing it up!

Danielle,

It's not a dumb question and to be honest, I have to admit to wolfing down a meal or two and I've gotten to the point where I don't have to chew, chew, chew, but as Jennifer pointed out it's good to take the time to savor every bite and in addition the points that she made, our intestinal tracts are not what they used to be and the more you can chew your food and break it down before it hits what's left of your intestinal tract the better and more nutrients you'll be able to absorb from the foods that you are eating. So, while you don't have to mu**** up like baby food, it's a good idea to really chew your food completely as you eat so that you can enjoy the benefits of what you're consuming ... both from a satisfaction perspective and from a nourishment perspective.

Thanks for posting such a thoughtful question.

All the best,

Barb

Unfortunately, I had to delete this post due to privacy concerns.

Got a lap band in 2008. Tried hard, but didn't lose much weight & developed swallowing problems. Fought my insurance company for almost a year & finally had a band to DS revision on 5/11/12. Have now lost 125 pounds. Yay!

I am 5 months post and if i eat to fast or don't chew well enough, i get the foamies and feel very very uncomfortable.    This is a good thing as i just give up...lol and figure i have had enough.

Good luck, Pam

Hello,

There is a light at the end of the tunnel..  Everyone is different but I'm almost 6 years out and I still chew a lot better than I did before WLS but not as much as that first year.  I have swallowed bites that weren't chewed enough and learned from my mistake - well it seems I've had to learn that lesson more than once (hard headed) but none-the-less I did learn.. lol!  I have to chew chew chew steaks to almost nothing so I don't eat it often, chicken and pork aren't as bad.  Once in a while I'll be chewing on something and have to get it out of my mouth because I just can't chew it any longer.   It just depends on the texture for me, but I've always been a texture person.

I hope you have a great day!
