First of all, Hello! It's nice to meet you and I look forward to getting to know you as you make your way on this journey of a lifetime.

Please know that each program and Dr. have their own protocols and that they may vary somewhat from patient to patient, depending on their unique needs. When I my surgery through the program at Duke, I did not have to do a two week fasting that some require, but I had been on a relatively low-fat, low-carb diet for quite a while before. Some Dr's prefer a 1, 2 or 3 week fasting diet before surgery. Others don't find it always necessary. All will want you to do all that you can to shrink the size of your liver. This is important so that they can 'see' what they need to see to do the surgery safely and to keep from damaging the liver when they do the surgery. Whatever your program and Dr. specify for you will be what they consider to be in your best interest, but it may vary anywhere from slightly to greatly from the experiences others here have had.

I don't know if that answer helped at all.

Wishing you all the best in your quest for a healthier you,

Barb

It's normal to be scared, so don't let that worry you.  Based on my experience, if yo have dropped 20lbs in 2 weeks, you're doing something right.  Follow the docs instructions and you'll be fine.  Remember that your doc is in many ways your "employee" not your judge!  He will tell you what he can or cannot do based on your physical situation.  But he is to work with you for your best health.  Therefore, call or e-mail their office and tell them you're scared and worried you aren't doing something right and can someone give you some guidance.  They want you to be successful (at a minimum, it's good advertising for them) so they will be there in your corner.  And don't hesitate to post here a often as you need some input from us, our even just a virtual hug!
keep us posted!

Wanted to offer you a big {{{hug}}} and tell you everything is going to be okay!  :)  I'm sure you already have a list of what you should be eating on the Atkins diet and how many grams of carbs you need to stay under.  If you are following that, then there is no reason to be scared about the diet part of things.  How soon is your surgery and where are you having it done?

If you've lost 20lbs in 2 weeks, you are shrinking your liver.

The liver stores extra food stores that haven't been turned to fat.  These are the first choice for extra energy needs not completely satisfied by food.  By turning to a diet that forces you to use these stores, you are in essence, shrinking your liver.

Here's the depressing part.. that 20lbs is mostly "water weight" from the liver being emptied of it's goodies.  In this case, water weight is good.. depressing, but good all the same.  Technically, you've not lost 20lbs of fat in 2 weeks.. noone really can without, yannow, a scapel and a massive vacume.  But this is still *really* good because once those stores are gone, you *are* losing fat.

Keep on the path you are going and you will be fine for surgery.  It sounds like you are well on the path to a successful WLS.

I am 54 and I am scared, too...  But I look at it this way - if so many others have done it, then so can I and so can you!

Congratulations on your decision to get healthy.  And 20 pounds gone in 2 weeks is an excellent start...

Please keep us informed on your progress.
