workplace chit chat about your WLS (long)
I'm just going to throw in my comment although the general idea is the same as everyone elses.
I work with mostly women, and I'm the next in charge when the boss is gone, so I have a lot of katty talkers to begin with, so I have had to get a "think what they will" opinion to begin with. I did tell my boss because she's more a less a personal friend, but other than my closest "sister" friend/co=worker, I told no-one. With Lapband you don't loose dramatic amounts like RNY, so people who did care enough to ask, just commented that I was really looking good, keep up the good work, etc. I let them think that I must have just been on a good diet program. To those that did ask and I was not comfortable telling, I just told them honestly "hard work, changed my diet, and added exercise to my life", which really isn't lying. To those who actually cared enough to address their weight issue and ask me how I did it so they could too, I confided in them. I figure if they were friend enough to seriously address their problem, I would share. The response usually was amazement, and they were very interested in it....who knows? Maybe someday I might be that inspiration for someone! Best of luck in whatever you decide.

I only told people whom I cared about and cared about me - I told people who would support me and help me when I needed it - that didnt include 'co-workers'. I did tell a few people I worked with but they were my friends who happened to also be co-workers, but were friends first - to this day I am still friends with those people even thou we all no longer work together :-)
I wouldnt tell anybody... from now on if people ask why you are out just say surgery, if they ask what kind just say you dont really want to get into details - or stick with abdomnial and say you dont want to discuss etc. Who cares if there is spectulation? Soon enough it will die down and people will move on from you... even if you have a 'special diet' when you get back you did have abdomnial surgery after all :-)
Way I figure, somebody else at work will do something gossip worthy soon enough and they will move on from you. Thats how it worked at my last job... this girl in the office started to get in trouble for her behavior and she become the latest 'hot topic' at the watercooler.

I am so thankful to have read through this entire discussion and the various ways you all have chosen how to handle it in your own lives. There's definitely not a one-shoe-fits-all type of answer and your replies have really helped me come to a blueprint decision on how I'll handle this topic myself in my life. :)
