What is your favorite?...

I start every day still with a shake made with one scoop of Champion Pure Whey Protein Stack mixed into some decaf coffee, lots of crushed ice, and a dollop of heavy cream (I am watching carbs).  It has the best mixing capabilities I have found and both the chocolate and the mochaccino are the best around!  On most days I have more than one shake. I will be almost a year out when you have your surgery!  Good luck!

May favorite is Unjury because it mixes well and tastes good.  But it isn't as easy to get as a lot of them are.  I think my surgeon recently started stocking it in his office, but I haven't gotten any from him yet.   I normally get the vanilla Body Fortress from Walmart.  I buy vanilla in whatever brand I buy because it is so versatile.  You can add it to things and add things to it and make it just about any flavor you want, but if you get an unflavored protein powder then you have even more versatility.   My sister just tried one from Trader Joe's that she swears by.  I can't remember the name but I think Max is in there somewhere, just can't remember the whole name.  It's around $25, so not bad on your wallet, either.   Welcome aboard, and bring on the questions!

Gosh Thanks to all of you so much! I tried to reply to all individually but I just don't have the time...and I started writing down everything but I don't have the time for that either so I am copying and pasting what I need to remember and starting my "What I Need for a Successful WLS Journey" file. Thanks again Debbie

Hi Deb,

I noticed that you have Dr. DeMaria for your surgeon. When you check my avatar, you'll notice that I had him too. He is very competent ... I had a complication during surgery and he handled without having to resort to an open procedure. Rest assured you'll be in good hands.

As you probably know, with Duke you'll be on protien stuff for the first 3.5 weeks, but then you will quickly wean off of the protien drinks to direct food sources. I used Designer Whey and AmericanWhey. Like Dena, I favor the vanilla because it's versatile, but I like the double dutch chocolate supreme from American Whey which is carried at the GNC stores. You can get the DesignerWhey at most retailers. Patrick will probably warn you off of the protien bullets because they are not a 'complete' nutrient source, but I know that a lot of people like them. They are too sweet for me. I used the protien stuff for the first few weeks and got off of it just as soon as possible ... which for me was within just a week or two of switching to the soft food diet. You can check my profile in the June/July timeframe if you want to see what I was consuming.

I hold a support group once a month in Raleigh and last month we did a protien tasting where several members brought different types of protien sources to share. We might do that again.

I hope to see you at an upcoming support group meeting at Duke. Of course, you'll probably be recovering this next month, but hopefully I'll see you at another very soon.

Welcome to the group and congratulations on your upcoming surgery.

Warmly,

Barb

We better becareful saying things are a good choice or bad choice post op as all of our programs, NUT, Drs etc have completely different plans. CIB, with skim milk and unjury come straight from my Dr.  It may be the case that your program is sugar gram crazy but that is only your plan. It is one of the ten meals I am suppose to eat daily. While I see we all want to help and flood our knowledge onto the board. We all really need to becareful when we make statements that "things are not good choice post op" since that may apply to you , ot me and half apply to someone else.  The one thing we should all know by this stage of the game is ten Dr's ,have ten completely random and different plans for their patients and we really can't make such braod generalizations

I would hope that people would realize that any post here on OH is somebodies 'opinion'... 99% of the time I personally will state a 'disclaimer' saying to always listen to your surgeon/NUT... however when it comes to anything higher in sugar I 110% feel its not a good choice - not based only on what my surgeon/NUT has said but based on the hundreds of hours I have spent on research both pre and post-op concerning nutrition post-WLS as well as listening to other post-oppers experiences, failures and struggles... especially relating to sugar.  Either way, Drs are people too - there are things my surgeon says that I do not agree with - its important that no matter what, people do their own research and make their own decisions since they are the ones living with it.  To clarify my surgeon/NUTs plan is not sugar gram crazy, my statements are based on my feelings which come from research/talking to others etc. Again I feel its important for one to be responsible for their behaviors and not do things just because somebody told them - no matter who that person is.
