Good Morning Chickadees, I'm having surgery on 8-8-08.  My spouse and I want to go on vacation with another family and are considering going on a cruise October 28th.  I'd like to get your opinion as to if you think that will be too soon or not. Obviously, knowing that everyone is different, where should I be as far as what I'm able to eat.  I would think there would always be something onboard that I should be able to have. Thanks,  Angie

Hello Angie,

at 20 days out you will not be able to eat much, ( well my doctor did not allow me to eat much at that point ) .... you will pretty much need protein drinks, cottage cheese, sugar free jello ... etc.. I think the traveling part would be fine, and most cruise ship have everything to eat... but remember --- you will be around lots of stuff you can not have , maybe a trip to the beach this year and the ship next year may be best ...

good luck

I would second the idea of going to the Beach TOPSAIL YEAH, as you are still going to be a new pouchy and it can be difficult as to eatting as one day and egg might be fine and the next day grouchy pouchy makes you sick as can be. The temptation of all the Cruise Foods might also be too much for you to handle

Hi Angie, Right now I am approching 4 weeks.  I know if I had to thinking about going on vacation in a couple of weeks I would be excited.  I would be afraid of what the boat would have that I could eat.  If it were me I would try to put it off for a couple of months.  Give yourself time to see what your going to be able to eat and what your body wants you to stay away from.  It will also give yourself time to heal and recover.  I know I still get very tired about 3-4 pm every day.  I know it will be a vacation but if your going with other people are they going to be wanting to go go go and do do do?  Good Luck on your upcoming surgery.  It is a journey that is worth it.

Don't know if i'd want to go on a cruise 2 1/2 months after the surgery.   By then, I was able to eat most foods but was still measuring (and still try to all the time) so that could be difficult.  Also, that is a lot of temptation.   I had my surgery in mid Feb and still find if I eat to fast or something doesn't agree with me, i get very nauseous.  Don't know how the ship would affect you with that, but that could also be a problem.    Think i would wait for the cruise for next year and stay on dry land this year.  If you went on a vacation and stayed someplace like a residence inn where they have a full kitchen, think it would be much easier for you to follow your new lifestyle and avoid a lot of possible discomfort. That being said, we are all so different! Pam

Hi Angie,

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery ... what a wonderful date! If you have your heart set on the cruise, you can probably do it, but you'll need to do some planning to help you make it work. You may want to talke with the nutritionist that supports your program to see what your restrictions will be at that time. I know that I was able to eat anything that was fork tender, without seeds, skins or strings. To be honest, that really gave me quite a bit of leeway. While there will be temptation, there will be plenty of good things that you can manage well ... shrimp ****tail, grilled and broiled fish, etc... On the other hand, you may still be having issues with fatigue, foamies, etc... and if you can postpone, you might want to consider it ... That said, if you really want to go, I believe that you can make the accomodations to make it work for you and still allow yourself to have a good time and stay on track with your program. You'll just have to make adjustments and make taking care of you a particular priority.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Barb

Oooooooooooooohhhhh a cruise, I'd love to go on a cruise!!! LOL!!  But like the others say, I'm not too sure what you'll be able to eat on board.  You may want to wait...  That said, I moved from NC to San Diego by myself 6 weeks after WLS...  I asked my doc what I would be able to eat on the road and pretty much stayed with that.  I was afraid to eat anything else because I did NOT want to have a problem in the "middle of nowhere"...  So, if you do decide to go, have a blast but ask your doc what they suggest...  I'm sure there will be something, but lots and lots of temptations for sure!!!

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts!  I've got some thnking to do for sure.  I'm not at all worried about being tempted with all the food onboard ship.  Last year when I went on a cruise, I actually lost weight!  I am concerned with feeling up to it, and having food available that I would be able to eat.  Decisions, Decisions, Decisions.... You gals are great.  Once again thank you!  Angie
