Fisrt of all I would like to thank you for your time in reading my post and answer my question.  I am 100lbs over weight, and at the min. that I need to weight that would put me about 110lbs overweight.  I am really interested in the surgery, since I have tried many things, Nutri System, weigh****chers, curves, protein diet, not eating, etc.  I know that BCBSNC is difficult to work with, and often times reject.  My BMI is 38.1, I do not appear to have type 2 diabeties, hypertension, coronary artery disease, although I have had to take cholesterol med. and then be taken off it, because it had my liver panel in a shape.  I just need to know where to start, and how to manuver around the BCBS. Again thank you for your time

I second what Shelli said.  I also believe that high cholesterol is considered a comorbidity and if that is true, as long as you are over BMI of 35, you shouldn't have a problem.   You may also want to ck with your primary care physician.  Mine was a huge help for me. Pam

Phyllis,

Pam and Shelli have given you good advice. Pam is correct, hyperlipidemia or high cholesterol is considered a comorbid condition. You probably will have to have a sleep study done as well, if you are a snorer and/or if you wake with headaches, there is a strong possibility that you might have sleep apnea another comorbid condition, but honestly, it only takes one to get you in with a BMI of 35 or more.

RE your insurance, call them and ask them point blank with there coverage is for WLS surgery with your particular policy, while BCBS generally covers it, your employer may have put special 'exclusions' into your policy. Beyond that, you want to know what they need in terms of supporting documentation. Do they require documentation of a supervised diet? How many months do they require? How long ago ... i.e., within the last year? 5 years? Do they require a 5 year weight history? etc...

I'm glad you are here and look forward to getting to know as you make your way.

Barb

P.S. I hold monthly support group meetings in Raleigh on the 3rd Saturday of each month. You are most welcome to join us anytime. You can get information about them at http://wls.meetup.com/101.
