Ok, I know this has been posted before and I can not find it anywhere. So the question of the day is. Alcohol, the papers that i got from the nut said that I could try whenever I felt comfortable. Reason I am asking I have like 3 weddings in the next 2-3 months, which I am apart of all, and I know there will be toasts and all that stuff there. When did you try the alcohol, and what did you find easiest to drink. Thanks,  Danielle

Danielle, My Dr & Nut say that you should wait a year before trying any alcohol.  Early out, I'd be worried about the affects on the pouch.  After that, I think they're primary concern is transfer addiction (but that's just my opinion.)  Personally, I'm following Dr's orders and haven't touched the stuff yet.  But...you can bet that on my 1 year surgiversary I'll be trying some wine!  :) If you do decide to try some, I'd try it at home first to make sure you don't get sick.  & remember, people say a little goes a long way now!    My recommendation though...I wouldn't ru****make sure you give your pouch plenty of time to heal!  You could always toast with a glass of water (I know it doesn't sound as much fun, but it's better than getting sick or doing damage.) Either way, good luck and enjoy the weddings!

My program wanted me to wait at least 6 months and to be VERY careful when and if I do have any. The portion of the intestine that is removed with the RNY is the portion that normally processes the liquor; of course, when it's gone, it doesn't process it. I don't know if you have any dumping issues, but if you do be careful because alcohol has a very high concentration of sugar. Also, the fact that the intestine is so much shorter causes the unprocessed alcohol to hit the liver with much more potency than it would in someone who had not had RNY ... I believe that this is also try for DS ... At any rate, your liver must work much harder to 'filter' the alcohol and you are more likely to 'feel' the affects and effects of the alcohol ... short term, because it'****ting your system faster and with more force, long-term, because it'****ting your system with more potency and could be more likely to cause the scarring known as cirrhosis. If you do decide to drink, please check with your Dr. to get their guidelines first so that you will know how much and what to expect.I hope this helps.Barb

I agree-- take it slow. I had surgery in Oct (as you know) and had my first taste of alcohol on New Years Eve (at home). it was only a little and it was mixed with something.  I'd be worried about dumping, and probably avoid beer (carbonation).  Just take it slow (a few sips go a long way).  Have fun in those weddings girl!

I still don't drink. I could have at 1 year.  But it makes me feel so loopy, drunk, and out of control. If you do drink, remember that you should only *sip* your drinks.  Don't drink like you used to.

I have tried a sour apple martini, a glass of wine, a margaritta, and a sangria. All were on different occassions The most I have ever drank on any ocassions in one glass of what ever I tried. None made me sick. The margaritta made me really woosy but not drunk.

When i went to my doc for my 3 month checkup he told me it was fine to try but to be careful of not drinking to much and no soda or carbonation.    I have had diet cranberry juice and vodka and made sure to measure only a shot.   Wouldn't do it when you are driving as it really hits me.   My sister (who hasn't had surgery) also said diet lemonade and raspberry vodka is awesome.   I also  limit myself to one drink as the liquor is empty calories. Have fun but be careful!! Pam
