I want to thank everyone for their prayers during my surgery and recovery. My friends and family where there to give me great support and especially ECUmindy when she was there with her husband James. I am doing real well. I am feeling better and stronger every day. The worst part of the surgery was my back killed me in pain when I woke up in recovery. The doctor said it was probably gas and lying flat on the operating table. It has gotten better every day since I came home. I have been able to lay in the bed off and on on my right side to sleep with pain meds and that helps take the pressure off of my back from sitting in the recliner. I am doing fairly well with drinking but it has been hard adding the protein powder to my meals because it makes it to thick. So I have been sticking to boost and broth with a little protein in them for the time being. I hope I can get more protein in when I move to stage two. Any advice in this area will be helpful. Thanks, Angela Frady

Hi Angela,

Great to hear that you are doing well. I'm sorry that you had a hard time with the back pain, but make sure to keep walking as much as you can ... at least once an hour. It helps to disapate the gas and ward off problems with pulmonary embolisms. Also, be sure to keep sipping constantly. CHeck with your Dr., but generally they are most concerned that you stay hydrated at first, followed by protien. Most folks don't get in 'all' the protien required right away. Generally, you work up to it and do the best you can. You'll find that as the swelling in your healing pouch goes down, you'll be able to consume more and more.

Be gentle and consistent. It will continue to get better.

Welcome to the loser's bench.

Welcome home Angela, and congrats on your surgery!  I just wanted to let you know that the back pain was my one issue too.  My Dr said the same thing.  Gas, I may have been laying on the table funny, and it was on the left side, so that's where the majority of work was done.  She said the pain would go away in time.  After 4 weeks I woke up one morning and it was gone.  Hopefully yours doesn't take that long (the fact that it's already getting better is a good sign!)  :) Good luck with your recovery, focus on the liquids and keep working on the protein.  You just have to keep trying things (have you tried the bullets?)  I recently have started making jello with the protein bullets...you can hardly taste them in there.

Hey girlie!!! James just asked about you this morning! I'll try to give you a call later. I'm glad you are doing well, but sorry the back issue and gas pain is still bothering you. Remember you can take gas-x a couple times a day to help. It's so funny when we cheer b/c he lets some out! Regarding the protein, try mixing it in sugar free orangeaide or lemondade. It got to the point after my surgery that I couldn't drink the Ensure/Boost, so we mixed the two scoops of protein powder into the orangeade, etc and I could drink it. It's all about trial and error to see what works for you. So far, James is doing ok with the strawberry, vanilla boost and protein powder... It sucks, but keep in mind it isn't forever!!! Anyway, take care and I'll try to call you later... glad to hear you are doing well!!! (((((((((((hugs))))))))))
