Worried about regain? Then take a gander.

Most of y'all know I had a regain of about 70lbs after the births of my two kiddos. I'd like to share that in the past 3 months, I have lost 41lbs.  3 months!  And hey, look at that surgery date.  I am now below my pre-Daniel weight.. haven't been this low since probably my 5th or 6th month of pregnancy with Kaitlin.. so that's been a *long* time. So while I don't have malabsorption (or not much, anyway) to help, I can *still* do it.  And this should give all of you who have it in the back of your minds about regain that you can do it too. (Results gotten from my neuro's office.. I see them every 12 weeks like clockwork.  To say they were shocked is a slight understatement.)

Hey Andrea.. I was lurking on the WLS Grad board today.. (Because I will be a year Post-Op soon) and was a bit shocked at how many people were posting about regain.  I had not heard about not having malabsorption before.. can you explain that to me?  Thanks!!   Jenn

The longer out you get, the less malabsorption you have.  The body, being a miraculous thing, adapts to the new cir****tances and starts absorbing (a bit limited) once again.  We still have issues with supplements, but I could eat a cheeseburger and candy bar and gain every calorie once again (plus, I never dumped). So my only tool left, for the most part, is my restricted tummy.

Wanted to jump in... first we will *always* malabsorb the vitamins/nutrients thats why we have to take them for life. As for the rest... Ive read that the intestines thicken some over time and become a more efficient at absorbing... also your body will adjust to the surgery and learn to live off the lessened amounts - thats one reason why they state there is an 'average weight loss window' of 18 months... it takes about that long for the body to adjust.

Yannow, this was never explained to me prior to surgery.. and I wonder how many don't know it, either.  It's something that I picked up on my own doing the vast amount of research I've done.

It wasnt to me either.. my surgeon explained the honeymoon period and weight loss window - but basically that there was one... it wasnt until I was on OH and doing research more that it started to make sense to me. Basically you can always keep losing weight but it gets to be more work - people dont want to hear about the 'work' parts... the surgeons only POV is really explaining the technical aspects and doing the surgery and send you on your way.. the rest is really up to you to figure out. There should be some seminar ran by post-WLS patients - like WLS - the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help me RNY hahaha!
