It depends on your surgeon - some surgeons will remove, others wont.... of the ones that dont remove some put their patients on actigall post-op to help prevent further stones from forming.  Gall stones cannot be treated by meds.... once you have them you have them... if you start having issues then the GB will have to be removed. Many people have gall stones and have no issues with them.

Melissa, Sorry to hear about this!!!  I do remember in our class they mentioned that everyone has to take Actigall.  I don't remember them mentioning anything about if you already had gallstones.   Let us know what you find out. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Ask your surgeon to remove the gall bladder during surgery.  Alot of people have to have it out at a later date anyway, there's no real strong need for you to have it, and it just saves a possible 2nd surgery. My surgeon took them out routinely as a matter-of-course.  I'm glad he did, too.

I can just echo what everyone else has said.. but add that I JUST had my GB taken out on May 19th.. it is still fresh in my mind.  I would also ask if the surgeon thought it was bad enough to warrant having it removed during RNY.  :)

Melissa,   Like everyone else said, I remember them talking about it was not a big thing to remove your gallbladder during surgery if needed. I would ask my surgeon, if it would be a good idea to do that. Then you wont have to worry with it. Hope this helps. Danielle

Melissa, Call Bobbi-Lou (if you haven't already) and see what she says. I'm pretty sure they will take out during RNY surgery unless they feel it will cause a problem.  I even asked Dr. Mac if he could take mine out all at once and he said insurance wouldn't cover it unless there was a REASON... I think a gall stone classifies as a "reason", but I'm not a doctor... I'm sure Bobbi will know though and I really don't think this will affect your surgery negatively.

Let us know what you find out!
