WOW I have been doing this whole process since Sep-Oct 2007 and I got a call today at work and was told that my surgery is going to be on JUNE 4th!!!!!! I can't believe how soon it is going to be!  I am doing a liquid slim fast diet and then on May 16th I start the 2 week Optifast diet..... I really have to loose alot of weight or he said he would cancel it. I have to go on May 23rd to meet a vascular Dr. for  a filter???? Anyone had that and if so what is it? lol Also, I have BSBC and they pay for like 80% of my WLS but will other 20% have to be paid before or do they put you on a payment plan?? Not sure how all that works? I would really  like to thank everyone on here for all the advice and support because you all have made this process much easier for me. Thank YOU!! Hopefully I will be joining the losers bench SOOOON ;) Meagan

Meagan, Congrats on getting a date.  I'll be having surgery on June 10th, not too far behind you!  I also have BCBS.  I have to pay a deposit to the hospital (like $500) and the rest will be monthly payments, but I have to pay my full 20% to the surgeon before surgery (this ended up being $400).  Of course, this is all after I've met my deductible (which I have) and I also have a limit of $1700 for my part.  After that insurance pays everything.  Each plan varies, but maybe this will give you an idea of how to plan for.  So, in summary, I have to pay $900 up front before surgery, which, considering how much it can cost out of pocket, isn't a bad deal at all.  Good luck! Meagan,

First of all congratulations on your upcoming surgery.

Secondly, I think that the filter you will have is called a Vena Cava filter. Some Dr's use this to prevent pulmonary embolisms. I know that they are standard procedure at UNC Chapel Hill. If you talk to AnnieP59, she can talk to you about it. She had one that caught a significant clot; that filter saved her life. She can tell you what to expect.

Re: payment for the procedure. Different programs handle things differently ... Soooo, contact the program administration office and let them know that you want to talk finances so that you have everything under control. They will let you know what the process is. With my surgery, the insurannce pays then I was responsible for the balance. I was able to work out a payment plan.

I hope that this helps.
