Hotdogs

I eat hot dogs very rarely - as you said they arnt the most nutritious. If you do decide to venture into hotdog land pick a low fat or fat free version - the regular ones are loaded with fat. All hot dogs are also pretty high in sodium so thats another thing to consider. You may find you dont even like hot dogs as much any more. They were one of my favs pre-op... every time I go home I have my dad grill one... this past trip I split one with my brother and was just like *eh*... wasnt all that exciting as it use to be!

I am hoping that I find I don't like many things I did before surgery. So far that hasnt been the case. I know everyone thinks this but sometimes the only reason I know they did the surgery is cuz I get full so much quicker! Thanks Melissa

I went along with my nutritionst, when she said I could try new stuff I did, sometimes it was not good but most times she always told me great advice. I remember how I longed for salad ,,, but I think it was several months out before  I could have one.  Hot dogs I do love and was able to try them sooner, peeled  and tad of mustard. I do eat them every once in a while not often, and normallt cut one in half ( I like the all the way , chilli , onions, slaw ) slowly eat the half and toss the other half.  I hope you have a nutritionist who can lead you during the journey. Everyone's doctors are different. But I would say you are not far enough out for hot dogs or salad ,,, just my thoughts Good Luck

I do have a nut. but she seems kinda spacey sometimes and I havent gotten alot out of her. The pa at the docs give me the go ahead to start to eat many things. I think part of my problem is I am a very picky eater and it seems like nothing I like or think I will like fits into the 5, 10 15 rule. I guess this is all part of the learning process! Melissa

Both things are hard-- like you, I was craving a salad early on and FINALLY ventured to eat a small bit (very few pieces of lettuce) over the past month or so (I'm 6 months out). Surgeon's orders were no raw veggies for 6 months and I stuck to that for the most part-- a couple times I tried, it didn't turn out well.  I ate a tiny bit of salad at Olive Garden about a month ago and I don't know if it was the lettuce or the dressing (could have been either), but again, it didn't turn out well... (HEHE) As with anything, I would take it SLOW and in small bites and see how it does before going full force into eating it... You may find that it works for you or doesn't... the first three months were the roughest as far as eating for me... I was still learning what I could and couldn't eat (more couldn't than could), but now at 6 months things are a little easier although it's still a trial and see type thing... :)  good luck!

Hey Midy. I agree these have to be the toughest months. Trying to figure out what to eat and how to eat it and how not to get sick or tired of things. Thanks for the info. I look forward to seeing the 6 month mark and see the change in my diet and myself.  Melissa

I have one occasionally.  Okay, not a whole one!  But I can eat about 1/2 of a hot dog with 1/2 a bun and all the trimmings without a problem.  I probably tried it first maybe 4-5 months postop.

Thanks for the info. I think I will hold off on the hotdogs for now. I am too chicken to try things that might cause pain. My doc said thats a good thing that the fear can help keep you form eating stuff you really shouldnt! Melissa

Hey!  I tried salad a couple months out.  I was fine.  Didn't eat alot though.  I found some winnies at Food Lion that are low in carbs.  I eat one every now and again.  I am have really been craving one lately though.  I am going to get one with everything and just eat a little.  I won't eat the bun, just enough of the winnie and ketchup, mustard, chili, & onions to get the taste.  I do that with burgers.  I order the burger regular and just take the bread off.  I am sure you have heard this a million times, but we are all different and my advice it to try things slowly.  Make sure you chew them well.  It may take a few mins for something to make you feel sick.  I tried some chinese food.  It didn't bother me in the first couple of mins, well, I ate some more then all of a sudden, I threw up.  Just find things that set well with you and measure.  Try to look for low fat, low calorie etc.  We can't completely give up all real food.  We just have to learn what is the best for us and keep our portions small.  Just experiment and take care!  Oh yeah, my taste changes weekly, even daily.  It is crazy.  But it works.  Take care!
