Sorry to hear that Allison.    When was your surgery date?  What is an iron infusion?    Can it bring your iron up pretty fast?    My prayers are with you! Pam

An iron infusion is where they give you a huge dose of iron ferritin intravenously so that it goes directly to your bone marrow, which stores the iron and uses it to process healthy cells. It takes several hours, because the iron is very thick and they have to administer it slowly.  There is some risk of shock, so they monitor carefully and often give a mild sedative, too -- this is all usually done in an oncology administration center. The infusions take hold quickly, but it takes three weeks to produce a mature, healthy blood cell. It can tell up to three months to have enough mature, healthy blood cells to make a doctor happy, depending on the level of iron deficiency and existing iron stores in the bone marrow. My hematology-oncologist clinic offers massage to patients!   It's a very relaxing setting in any case, what with the sedative and the cozy chair, and the massage makes it easy to doze through most of the time.  I always intend to read or do some editing, but I always end up napping instead.

OMG! Maybe Jenn's post will be what saves you. I remember that once you read her 1st post in regards to vitamins, you were going to pick them up and get back on track. I hope all your plans for surgery continue as planned. Please keep us posted. Prayers!!!! xoxo Mare

My Plastic surgery is scheduled for April 23rd , but I need to have this infusion done and my labs re drawn by the 17th to go ahead with the surgery, very close call -- not only am I now taking all the vitiams I am eating only iron rich foods,,, clams have the most but I can not even consider eating them YUCK , so I am using Total breakfast cereal plus iron as a snack munchie ( can't do milk ) I am really trying to up it the old fashion way as much as I can. The nurse told me the iron infusion will take most of the day, first they will hook me up on a IV , and put a small amount if iron in my system then wait about an hour to make sure I have no reaction to it, if that goes in ok, I will then need to have about 4 hours on the dip to pump the iron in me. Shots of iron are not going to be enough for me I , they say it would not bring my numbers up quick enough for surgery... so being a stupid butt and not doing what I should have NOW I pay for it.  If I can not get my levels up in time I may need to reschedule my surgery. I have planned a trip to England the end of July so really if I can't do the surgery by April I will need to wait until September ,, and then of course more painful rashes and infections ...  I really thank you all for being my shoulder and support  Allison

Sorry to hear about the labs :-( I will pray that everything works out in time so you can still have surgery!!!  Thank you as well for posting - its a good reminder all around as to why we need to do the vits/supps even thou they cost $$$ and get old after a while. Its like we all turn into teenagers with the surgery and think we are invinisible and get that attitude of "not me" when it comes to sooo many things (myself included of course)! I will say I am lucky to have a good friend 6 years out because Ive seen all the 'bad' sides of not following instructions etc because shes the poster child for that (lol)!  Keep us posted on your progress *sending good iron thoughts your way*!

Well, the race is on, Allison!  Sounds like you might be able to squeak through?  I sure hope so!  Good luck with the infusion, and keep us posted.  You'll be pink as a pup afterwards, so everyone can admire the springtime blush of youth upon your cheek.
