I am having a hard time not drinking during my meals.. and I am having a hard time eating slowly.. I think that is what is causing the pain?  Am I right.. Can anyone make some suggestions.. See my private message to you. :) I forgot to add mashed potatoes to that list. The pain could be coming from eating too quickly and too much at once. Remember small bites and chew, chew, chew, and then chew some more even when you think its all chewed already. You have to go slowly so put your spoon/fork down between bites. I ate while playing on the computer - it helped me go slower. Also, don't even have drink near you while you are eating. It is to tempting and a no-no. When you drink with your food you are washing everything right out of your pouch. Nothing 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after. It gets easier...I promise! Becky

Hello Dukes Mom, DO you have a nutritionst that is helping you ?  I would say at this stage fish or any meat is a NO NO. I was told to start of course with protein drinks ( Dear Lord I HATE them now ) .. then , sugar free jello, cottage cheese ( if you like it goes down great ) .sugar free pudding , eggs, ... you must learn to pace yourself , get a baby spoon take a small bite, even if you are having a bland soup use a baby spoon.. take the bite lay your spoon down , you must chew chew chew chew and chew again. Wait before taking another bite .  I went to my local GNC store abd got tons of protein samples, hated them all , Carnation Instant Breakfast Sugar Free was the best . You can add the whey to anything but start out with just a small amount. It is hard I know it will get better soon.  Take Care

I am almost 2 months post and still can't get all my protein in so I use 3 oz protein bullets which i order online.  They are 42g of protein and no sugar or carbs.    Think they covered the foods i know of in other post.   I get pain if i eat to fast or don't chew enough.....got that down pretty well now but i still gulp my drinks and think i may have to resort to straws. I do believe at 3 weeks out i was eating moist chicken (dark is easier than white) but cut it up very very fine and then chewed chewed chewed and only baby bites. I still do Carnation Instant Breakfast (sugar free) for breakfast and probably always will as it is a very quick, ez breakfast. Good luck! Pam

I just drink out of the vial and slug down 1/2 in the a.m. and the rest in the afternoon.   They don't bother me at all.  I do know some ppl add to their water or crystal light. Pam

Hi Cory! Thanks for reaching out.  Pureed means, well, pureed.  Which means ground up so fine it is almost a liquid consistency and should definitely be no more solid than pudding especially if you are having a hard time.  Baby steps, girl!  You can eat pureed meats and veggies and mix them with gravy or broth at this stage, just remember it has to be virtually liquified in a blender.  I did well with cream soups with added unflavored whey powder.  Unfortunately unflavored doesn't mean it has no flavor...  But you can whip up some mashed potatoes and soft veggies in the blender and you can add in some gravy and ground or finely chopped meat and puree that all together and it makes a palatable meal.  Just don't consume more than a quarter cup at a time.  At this stage I wouldn't be unduly concerned with drinking at your meals, although the liquids have no nutritional value and fill you up.  Better to fill us on pureed foods.  Then drink.  Try using baby utensils to make sure your bites are tiny.  And put down the fork between bites.  Focus on the flavor and the texture.  Use salad plates to let your mind think it is getting more.  Pay attention to the eating process.  Go to Eggface's webpage for recipes for pureed foods.  Really pureed could be anything stuck in a blender.  Don't be afraid to try new stuff just make sure it's the right consistency.  I will PM you later with some specific suggestions.  Sorry for the long post...  Keep us apprised of your progress!

Hi Duke's Mom! Is that Duke's picture in your avatar?  He's a cutie! OK...first of all, relax.  You're doing fine.  It takes a lot of time to get used to this new way of life, and you're getting there.  Yes...you need to eat incredibly slowly.  Eating food too fast is the ONLY thing that causes me problems to this day!  :) You've gotten some great suggestions already.  One of my favorites in the pureed stage was refried beans.  If you can do cheese, put a little bit of shredded cheese on top of some refried beans.  I even sprinkled on a little cilantro.  Yum! Good luck to you!  Remember...small bites and keep chewing even when you think you're done!
