I do 1/2 of a toasted english muffin with chz and a slice of canadian bacon. Actually suggested by nut. and it sits well.

I would suggest some high protein, low carb alternative to plain white bread, which may not sit well at all even though it has been a while since your surgery.  Perhaps stuffing one of those low carb pitas they have at Walmart?  Or a low carb wrap?  And heating or grilling those til the cheese melts?  I am sure that would satisfy the craving without throwing good nutrition out the window.  You might want to consider low fat cheese as well.  I find that most of my jonesing for food can be satisfied by a healthy substitute.

I can do bread if it is toasted.  I would try wheat bread toasted well.  :)  It is just funny how food varies from person to person and nut to nut.  LOL  I would try it and see how it works.  That is usually to ONLY way I can tell if  food is going to agree with me or not.

You are making my mouth water because my favorite food in the world is a grilled cheese sandwich!! I wish I could have one but bread does not sit with me AT ALL anymore!!! it feels horrible and my doctor says it is a no no till Im a year out, but if it still feels the way it does now I will never eat bread again LOL best of luck to you!

I am almost 6 months out and can't tolerate bread TOO well, but I do eat some in small quantities... I try to eat my protein first and then nibble a bit on the bread b/c I love it more than sweets! I'll tell you, I have found that TORTILLIAs fill that void for me. I can eat one small tortilla now with various protein in it-- chicken, cheese, ham, etc... If you can't do the bread, try doing a small tortillia wrapped with ham and cheese and grilled like a sandwich... I bet it would be good! Usually I stick mine in the microwave for the cheese to melt. Also, maybe an english muffin toasted would kil the craving and not hurt with the bread...

Melinda has the right idea.  Take a small tortillia, put it in a frying pan, melt some cheese and put some ham on top and fold it over.  cut it up in triangles and you got a mexican grilled ham & cheese!  Small bites and chew really good.
