Hello to all! I'm havin gastric bypass surgery on April 10th. I'm really excited because it took me eight months to get past the pre-op stuff. I was wondering what should I expect when I'm there? Before surgery, after, while I'm in the hospital? Any advice would be highly appreciated! All I can think about is my surgery date! Thanks                                                                                                     -Shelly-

I just wanted to say good luck! Your surgery date is one day before my 6 month surgiversary!!! :) I was in the hospital appx 2 1/2 days-- entered Thursday morning, left Saturday afternoon... The first day is kind of a daze... they give you a morphine pump and use it!  The second day (usually that morning) they take you for a leak test-- you drink some white stuff and they xray you-- getting there was the issue for me-- it did hurt to get out of bed and into the wheel chair, etc... once they determine there is no leak, then you get your first meal-- YEAH! it is 2 full ounces of BOOST!!! It was good though-- HEHE Then it is rest, walk, rest, walk and so on... Itook magazines and other stuff with me to the hospital and didn't use a bit of it!!!  Congrats again and let us know if you have other questions! Oh-- who is your doctor?

Mindy,              Thank you for responding and for the info! I'm kinda nervous about the morphine pump. I dont wanna use it too often or too less. I was wonderin if someone could figure out how many times an hour to push the button to get an even amount of morphine. Like, every 10 mins or somethin. I just dont want to end up usin too much and bein without until I get my next bag or not usin enough and bein in pain. That's one of my major concerns. My doctor is Christian Mann from Southern Surgical. Thanks again.                                                                                                     -Shelly-

My surgery was a Tuesday morning and I did not get a morphine pump.  The nurses checked me every few hours to see if i was in pain.   They took my catheter out by 3 pm and informed me if i didn't urinate by 11, they would have to put in back in.   Based on that I got my butt up every hour and walked for 10 min (figured gravity would help and it did).   I basically walked and slept and then repeat of the same.  Family and friends came to visit and I sent them all home and had my hubby call and ask them not to come.   I was discharged on Thursday at 10 am.  Once home, I made sure to get up and walk around the house 10 minutes on the hour as i was paranoid of blood clots.   I was on soft foods within 10 days.   Make sure to get stocked up on stuff for you liquid diet.  Good luck on your surgery! Pam

Shelly, Everything has changed since my WLS but I remember being groggy from the drugs and having to get up to go for a walk, and the pouch leaking tests, but they weren't that bad.  I know you're excited!!!  Congratulations and see you on the loosers bench!

I had a morphine pump that would only administer a very small doage at 6 minute intervals. Even if I pushed the button 30 times a minute it wouldn't allow me to overmedicate...which I didn't try to do. I'm just saying...LOL Mare
