Why can't we have caffeine?
I am about 5 weeks post surgery. I know we are not supposed to have caffeine and don't know why? For the past week or two, I have been drinking about 6 ounce of reg coffee in the morning as i need the boost. Used to drink 80 ounces every morning. Am i hurting myself? Why aren't we suppose to drink caffeine? This is probably the only thing i have that i am not supposed to.
Thanks, Pam

IMy paperwork from my surgeon says that I would have to avoid caffiene for the first month or two because it could irritate the new pouch I will have - I thought he siad that eventually I could reintroduce it to my diet as long as it did not upet me. Maybe I am wrong ? But this is how I understood it.
Pam... I too must have coffee. Right after surgery I tried decaf, all I can say is YUCK!!! At about 3 weeks post-op I switched to Folgers 1/2 Caff. Took a about a week to get use to it but now I love it. As a matter of fact, regular coffee now tastes too strong. I only wish they made more flavors of the sugar free liquid creamer. All I've been able to find is Hazelnut and French Vanilla.

Christy,
There are some great powdered SF creamers I just bought some vanilla carmel it is very tasty stuff.
I have started having a cup of freeze dried Folgers after dinner with the SF creamer and totally loving it.
I call this my desert along with my fiber wafers.
This is totally new for me.
Last night we went out for dinner to celebrate a friends birthday
when it came time to order desert I ordered a cappacino and was a happy girl.

Why?? It's the way caffeine dehydrates you if you drink too much. I have about one cup regular coffee most mornings and have had not problem. i have switched to decalf tea with splenda and have adjusted to it pretty good, but I just don't care for the decalf coffee....

I asked my nut because I love tea and most resturants don't have decafe tea. She said it was because of dehydration and if I wanted sf tea it would not hurt when I eat out. I use decafe tea at home but since I don't drink much coffe ....it is not decafe. In the begining I thought it would cause ulcers but she said that is not the case it is dehydration. Just don't abuse the caffeen and you should be OK. Best to ask your Nut though.
I drink coffee every day. Starbucks, full strength, usually a venti. I am a year out, I don't think I would try that size just yet.
In any event, as long as you are properly hydrating yourself otherwise, a cup a day isn't going to hurt you. Be aware that coffee, in addition to being a diuretic, is also high in acid. That will cause irritation in your stomach, that is why you have to wait for a bit before you try it. Just take it slow and pace yourself.
Take care.

I was told we are allowed to have 300mg of caffeine a day - thats roughly 3 cups of coffee (depending on what you drink) however, for every cup of caffeine you need to drink an *additional* cup of water.
As stated above caffeine is dehydrating so you need to make up for that - as for coffee, since its acidic it can cause problems for some so make sure you keep it limited and drink that additional water.
