After the diagnosis. You may benefit from a referral to an occupational therapist or phyical therapist that had been trained in manual lymph drainage. This is specialized training. So make sure you go to a clinic the has a properly trained therapist. The treatment may involve bandaging, manual lymph drainage (massage designed to help the lymphatic fluid flow) and compression stockings. There is no cure for lymphedema but the treatments are very helpful. At one time I was diagnosed with lymphedema, but it turned out I really had a blood clot when I broke my tibia and fibula. The inital injury occured in 1996, the diagnosis of blood clot was finally figured out after my weight loss in 2007. I am also an occupational therapist who treats lymphedema.
