WElllllll today is my 2 week mark since surgery and guess what?!?!  I GOT TO START SOFT FOODS....lol  Oh and I'm down 16lbs. since surgery!! But I have been on an Optifast and Optisource diet for the past month...NOTHING to chew!! OMG what a happy day for me...LOL Soooo for lunch i had me 2 egg whites with a little bit of Fat free shredded cheddar cheese and scrambled then then topped with a little bit of salsa juice!! Yum-O??? Uh not really...LOL It tasted like rubber and wasnt like the good 'ol scrambled eggs with velveeta cheese and topped with ketchup that i used to have!! hahaha!! Weird I know...so tonite I just had refried beans with a 1/2 slice of velveeta cheese and some salsa juice and it was okay!! But nothing really is knocking me over yet!! Hmmmm!! 1 month without any food whatsoever and I have been soo excited about this day and finally I get to eat and its all tasting just kind of EH!!!
I also have a question...my surgeons food list..on his list of foods to avoid is Soups especially Cream soups?!?!?! OMG WHY???? I have been looking forward to having some brocolli and cheese soup or something yummy like that!! What do you think would be the reasoning to go straight from Optisource to the soft food stage (MIND YOU i completely skipped pureed) and I can't have soup I was just curious!! Also I get to look forward to next Wednesday I get to add SEAFOOD to my diet!! YAY!!  But yeah i just wanted to let ya know, i get to have food now!!! OH HAPPY DAY!! Hopefully I will come across "SOMETHING" that tastes decent!

Soup is too easy to eat, it's very much like drinking while you eat, which is a no-no.  GBS patients can eat a much higher quantity of soup than they can regular meals.  I avoid it myself because I eat too much of it calorie wise and I end up dumping on it the bulk of the time.  I would do my best to stick to the list the doctor gave you as long as you can.  You will be happier knowing you followed his instructions later on. Incidentally, I don't think I'd worry about fat free cheese right now.  Regular or reduced fat is fine, you need the calories at the moment.  Switch to that stuff later if you must. Take care and good luck experimenting. Ellen

Own it all, it's yours!

Thanks for your reply Ellen :) I really appreciate it!! Yeah the fat free stuff is almost too dry and tonite with my beans i had regular velveeta sliced cheese but gave half to my daughter and tore up the rest to put on my beans :)  And I'm waiting around to see if it will make me sick, but so far so good! I'm sad about the soups because I was really looking forward to some, but i guessss i won't argue with Dr. Pender...LOL Cuz I won't win!!!

Creamy soups are startchy, empty calories and for me they make me sick, espically if they have real cream in them like she crab soup or creamy clam chowder.  And it is like eating and drinking a meal together.  You also have to watch the sodium in them.  We told you things would taste different!  LOL...  Can you try some riccada with pizza sauce yet.  That is good also.  Texture and taste changes for alot of us but it does get back to normal months down the line most times.

When I was at the stage you're at, I ate regular eggs and regular or reduced fat cheese and had NO problem.  You need to enjoy the little bit of food you get and if you enjoy it you will be more satisfied.  One thing I found very good is cracker barrell 2% chedder cuts (if you like chedder cheese).  Congrats on getting started learning a whole new way to eat!  From now on, it's EAT TO LIVE, NOT LIVE TO EAT!

Darn...I just ate some Creamy Cheddar Broccoli Soup and now I feel like it was empty calories!  It is on my list, though, so I guess everyone does have their thing.  My surgery was last week and I started on thin soups/broths, etc.  I'm not sure I could have made it on a month of opti liquids.  YOU GO JAMI!    Keep up the good work. Don't make yourself feel bad!  If it's on your Dr's list, then he's fine with it!  It was on my list early out too.  Now I prefer to have more dense proteins, but in those early stages I was all over the soups whether they were broth based or cream based!  Hey if nothing else, I got to count them as liquids too!

Woo hoo!!!!!   I know you're happy!!!  Every doc is different but mine didn't allow cream soups either, he said it wasn't a dense enough protein...  Anyway, congratulations on the loss and keep up the wonderful work!!!!
