Question about food tolerance

I have been on a soft food diet for 2 weeks and my doc has told me i can start to add other foods slowly.  The only fruit i am eating at this point is baby food as i need it to go to the bathroom.  Baby prunes are needed at least every other day.   How soon did you all add like salsa to your diets?   I am missing it so and could also eat with my low fat wheat thins but feel because it is spicey, I may be rushing things.  Another question i have, is does anyone eat a part of an orange?  If so, how far out were you from surgery before you tried it and have you been able to tolerate it?   I used to eat salads 4 or times a week and my body is craving fruits and veggies. Thanks a bunch! Pam

Trial and error. That's what this stage is. There is no reason you couldn't try something spicy. You'll quickly learn whether or not your new tummy will tolerate it. I say if it sounds good, try it. As for fruits and veggies. I was told no raw fruits/veggies for six months. Everything at this point should be soft, moist, and fork tender. I guess you also need to be cautious of the amount of sugar that is in fruits. I'm not a big fruit eater so I haven't tried anything out. I'm sure the veterans will chime in on that one. :) Becky

I know my Nut told me i could eat baby food fruit as they have no sugar added and they really help me in the bathroom dept.   Even had to resort to baby prunes.   Because of all the fruits and veggies i had before, i never had this problem.   Feel like a baby trying to learn how and what to eat all over again. Thanks Becky! Pam

Spicy food never bothered me.  I think I may have even pureed onions when I was at that stage.I love it even more now than I did before. Now that the portions are more limited I want to be able to taste every bite I put in my mouth. B

Onions sound awesome!  I am a fruit and veggie nut so that is hard part at this stage. Thanks, Pam

Trial and error, as stated above, is really where you are now.  Each of us is different in what we can tolerate.  I can do spicy, but you'll have to try it and see.  One other word of caution about fruit and veggies.  Be vary careful of the skin.  You are still very tight from your surgery, the skin can block your stomach opening and cause you some pain until it moves, either down, or back out.  I would peel anything I try for right now and chew carefully.  Eventually you won't have to do that, but for now be careful.  You'll only have to get the foamies once to know what I mean about that. Good luck. Ellen

Hi Pam, Spicy foods were easy very early on for me.  Trial and error... and sometimes trial and it's fine!!  Enjoy every experiment!  You could eat salsa I should think, with no problem.  I am a big salad freak too so I eat leaf lettuce earlier than 6 months out.  Probably more like 2 months.  Dice your tomatoes thin. You can peel the tomatoes as well.  Small bites and chew chew chew! EVERYONE should experience the foamies at least once!  LOL

Oh and as for oranges, you aren't going to want a whole one anyway.  Try a few sections with the membranes removed.  I bought some of that fresh citrus salad in the chilled cases at the grocery store (WalMart carries it--I think it's made by Dole) and a few sections of that went down just fine.  I also ate fresh, after taking off the skins.
