Food Police Story, wanna share?

Oh my God, I have to share this with someone, because it is so ridiculous I can't get over it.  Tuesday I brought some tuna, a half piece of double wheat bread, and a piece of lettuce that was the size of a piece of sandwhich bread.  Well, there is this lady at work that has to criticize what I eat every day.  Well,  I had to take the Head Start children to the dentist, so I didn't have time to eat until 1:00.  She had been sitting there since 12:00 and had finished her lunch.   She started watching me unpack my lunch.  She said "when did you start eating bread?"  I said "today".  She said "you know if you put mayo in that tuna, it makes a lot of fat and calories".  "You don't need mayo, learn to eat w/out it".  Then she saw the lettuce.  She had the nerve to say "lettuce is the worse thing you could be eating".  She kept on talking and making smart comments about my food, the whole time she was drinking a sierra mist.   I finally got pissed off and said "you know that is so crazy for you to tell me that lettuce is the worse thing I could eat while you are drinking a sweet soda".  She is like "I can digest this, you can't digest that lettuce".  Then everybody had to chime in with stories of people they know that had surgery way before me and still can't eat meat and other things.  I am so sick of it.  I just don't see how she can eat like she does and then critisize me.   I feel like she attacks me on a daily basis.  I made myself eat a little lettuce to try to get some veggies.  It isn't like it is so tasty that I crave it.  I am sure others have food police to deal with....Sorry, I had to vent.   Does anyone else have a food police story?  hahaha

Not only food police but people that tell me what i should be doing and how much i should be exercising.  I reply that i have one surgeon and nutritionist and follow their directions and since when did they get these degrees and know more than a doc.  I agree with you.....I would like to choke these people but then realize it is just ignorance! Take care and keep a smile on your face! Pam

No police story, but had to post a chuckle.   Don't you love how everyone thinks they know what you should be eating over you? People that have never had WLS? I think its funny...  Sorry you had to endure that-- hopefully she got the hint when you mentioned the soda...

The women I worked with used to be vicious.  I finally told them, you wouldn't tell a fat person to stop eating because they are too fat, so quit telling me to eat up that I'm too skinny.  In my opinion there is no such thing as too skinny for a RNY patient. I stood up to these people and know i know people judge me, but they can go you know what. I eat what I want and how I can eat it.  I don't always make the most healthy choices, but darn it I'm only human and sometimes crave M&M's too. Anyways, just tell her what time it is and acted really annoyed.  I would question what made her the expect. Plus, I can be Mean when the occasion calls for it.

You dont want to know what I would say to her LOL but for her to be sucking on a Sierra Mist just speaks *Volumes* about her Nutritionist experience in life LOL Tell her you thank her for her imput but you are working with your Doctor and his staff and are following their guidelines NOT HERS.

Stac -

I'm so sorry that these gals are frustrating you, but as Pam said you can just let them know that you are following your program's protocol and unless they have information from your program they can keep it to themselves. I'm delighted to hear that you can eat lettuce and anything else that your program allows. The point of this is not to keep you from eating lettuce or anything else for that matter. The point of this is for you to lose weight as safely as possible, under the guidance and direction of people who specialize in the treatment of bariatric patients. It's also to learn to eat a healthy diet in the longterm, which according to my program includes fruits, vegitables, meats ... even some carbs and fats. While I wouldn't be rude, I would let them know that you have access to all of the nutritional guidance that you need.

Hang in there sweetie ... You are doing just fine!

Stacy,   Sorry you had to endure this!   Some people just think they know everything, and feel they should share, but in reality the best thing for them to do is keep it to themselves. You can't help people like that! I think that you are doing wonderful, who cares what she thinks, she can build a bridge and then jump off of it~~ ha ha.  I had to make you laugh a little. Have a much better day today! Danielle

No food police story here... but next time she says something here is my advice: ask her "when did you graduate from medical school?" she will have no answer... I usually follow up with a smart remark after... no medical school? well when did you become a nutritionist who specializes in WLS? oh you arnt? well then how are you qualified to say what I can and cant eat? Or you can say - well my surgeon disagrees with you, since he went to med school and did my surgery I think hes more qualifed.  You can also tell her that you know somebody (me!!!) that can eat what they want... and it all digests just fine. I started on veggies during my soft foods phase - at 2 weeks out, I was allowed dry breads/crackers then as well... normal eating at 2 months out.

"Oh my goodness! You ate tuna, lettuce and a slice of hearty, healthy bread!" Puh-leeze!! I think it's sad but alot of people secretly (or not so secretly, in this case) want you to fail just so they can say "See? Told ya so!" Tell her next time if you want her opinion, you'll choke it outta her.  Hee xoxo Mare

I understand where you are coming from.  I have visited our local GNC twice and the same lady was there twice.  I see things on this site that people talk about that I want  to try and she tries to act like I shouldn't have them.  Just last week I went in there looking to try an Oh yeah Bar and she kept arguing with me that I didn't need that if I wanted to loose weight.  I said I will not eat one everyday and I also will not eat the whole thing.  She kept on talking about it and shaking her head no that I didn't need it.  I don't even want to go back to this store because of her.  People are always sticking there nose where it doesn't belong.  If I had to deal with her everyday I would definitely put her in her place.  YOu keep up the good work and try not to let her discourage you!
