I was curious to know if you had to pay out of pocket for nutrition visits.  I just made an appointment with the nutritionist and they said they do not file insurance and its 100.00 for initial visit then pre op is 100.00 every month up til four months after.  So a total of 500 OOP for nutrionist.  Im wondering if I can find a different nutrionist that files with insurance to pay.  Just curious how everyone else did this.

Physicians East in Greenville, files it on your insurance. If you have BCBS, they have a "healthy lifestyle" plan that you can call and get added to, and you get 6 free nut. visits a year. So my first visit was free, and I have 5 more that I can use this year. Hope this helps some!!

I had to pay for the initial visit up front, most insurance companies dont cover nutritional visits - however once I was approved for surgery I filed a claim with the insurance company and got reimbursement - they will cover the initial NUT visit post-approval. I think they charged $150? BCBS of NC allows for 6 free NUT visits a year... if you have a different insurance call and see if they cover nutritional counseling, again most dont. Many give a discount like thru cignas healthy rewards but that is it. After the initial visit my NUT only charged around 25$-$30 a visit if your insurance didnt cover, I paid that up until BCBS started the 6 free vists in 2007. Now I am on Cigna and its not covered so I pay the $25 last time I was there.  Personally I think $500 is steep - but what does that include?  I saw my NUT once pre-op, at 2 weeks post-op, 2 months post-op then 6 months post-op... after that I was really to see her 'as needed' or when I hit goal (to learn about maintenance eating)... I chose to see her at 11 months out when I was stalled, I went back again when I hit goal.

$500 for the nutritionist sounds WAY high to me.  My visit was done in a group setting and was also NOT covered by insurance.  That being said, I believe it was around $50.

The $500.00 includes your pre op visit and Post op for 1 year, also 1 visit with a personal trianer at CMC NorthEast.   At first I thought $500.00 was a little steep, but for me it was money well spent.  If I'm not mistaking they did tell me that after my 5th visit I could bill my Insurance Co.  which is BCBS of NC  so we'll see what happens with that.

My nutritionist visit was $200, but that is for three visits...one pre-op and two post-op.  I have BCBS of NC, though, so I'm definitely going to check into these free visits others have mentioned.   Amanda
