Hello,   i had my surgery Feb 10,2007. my hair was about shoulder length. And like some of our friends out here on obesity help, I did experience hair loss. I know that everyone is different...some people lose more then others. For me I was coming out pretty fast...so what i did was I started taking a extra vit. , increased my protein intake....and went out a got a short hair cut.   I know that my hair will grow back....and it has...as soon as my weight started to level out it slowed down alot. I wish you all the best. have a good day.                                                                                                                          Stephanie

Dee: Most will experience hair loss....personally I am still losing hair, but it is better than earlier. It will usually start at at a couple of months and can last for many months. You can take biotin(it's in the vitamin section) but it will not stop the loss only helps it for new growth once it starts. I have been taking it since the get go. Just keep your protein levels as high as you can. That is vital. Lisa

Hi Dee, Everyone has given good feedback on your question. Yes hair loss can happen after wls. I am 7 months out and my hair loss did not start till I was 6 months out. I have read that hair loss comes from rapid weight loss. Im always working on getting lots of protien in everyday which my doctor says will help. To tell you the truth if I lost all my hair I would still be happy. Just to loose the weight is my main goal and loosing hair isnt that important to me like I used to think there are wigs I could wear if I had too. So far the hair loss seems to be slowing down a little and dosent make me look like I am bald. I am still a happy camper no hair or not.                                          Annie

I lost barely any hair... it started around 3 months out and ended at 5 months... I described it as 'more hair loss than usual' but nothing super bad. I did have a lot of baby hairs that grew back in - my hairdresser was the only one who noticed :-) You can take a hair and nails formula or biotin to help your hair - mind you it does NOT prevent hairloss and only helps NEW hair growth. The reason our hair falls out is from the anesthesia and malnutrition - so post-op getting your protein in each and every day will help as well.

If I have lost any it has been MINIMAL.  I have been very fortunate with the hair loss issues.  I started taking Biotin at week #2 post op and I think that has helped me tremendously!

I began loosing my hair around month 4. Even though I was on a high absorption biotin and made sure I surpassed my protein goal everyday.  Since it was long and straight, it was noticeable enough for me to decide to cut it off. I have always had stick-straight hair. It came back curly! All around the bottom it is in little tiny ringlets it so curly.

Crazy, huh?

I'd take bald over fat anyday.

Hi Dee! I don't have anything much in addition to share other than my personal experience and what my surgeon told me.  First of all, practically everyone loses hair.  It's the starvation and "malnutrition" and the shock your body goes through at the beginning with such rapid weight loss.  I started with biotin as soon as I could, very early on, and always met or exceeded my protein requirements.  My hair began to fall out around 3 months and increased through 5 months and is now (at 7 months) significantly slowed down.  My surgeon said there was nothing I could take to prevent it, but the skin and nails vitamins and/or biotin will help when it grows back.  What I noticed in terms of appearance is that my hair seems "thinner" (like the rest of me!  lol), not as full.  I have every confidence it will grow back and I now have been through the worst of it. Hope this helps!  It was worth every follicle!
