diet soft drinks??????

I thought it would be tough to give up my decades-long Diet Pepsi habit (my best friend noted that stock prices for Pepsi are sure to plummet in 2008, so readjust your investment portfolios!), but it turned out to be an easy loss.  Sure, every once in a while I need a little fizz, but after a few swallows, I experience the most unladylike burps!  So it's a rare and very private pleasure.

Giving up my Coca-Cola habit was probably one of things that concerned me the most. I was able to do it without as much pain as I was concerned about. Like Paula, I found that I really became a huge fan of Crystal Lite. My program does allow you to have carbonated bev after 3 months, but to be honest I haven't indulged very often. I don't dump, so I can have Coke if I want to. I've tried it, but it is generally too sweet for me now; hard to believe since I used to be able to inhale a coke in record time. I don't like the diet versions either, so I usually have water with citrus or Crystal Lite, not out of deprevation, but out of choice.

Hope that helps.

Barb

P.S. The issue with the carbonated bev. is the gas and it's expanding in your pouch. According to my nut., some people find it very uncomfortable, some don't. I don't find that the carbination bothers me. I'm not sure about the caffiene issues though. You might want to check that out with your nut or post a question about it on the Diet and Nutrition forum where they have RD's that monitor that board.

I would suggest you start weening yourself off soda pre-op and it will be much easier post-op.  Many surgeons say no carbonation for life, some will allow after a certain amount of time. You may find after not drinking soda for so long you really dont miss it much. I found when I re-tried dark diet colas post-op they tasted completely horrible. I find the light diet sodas usually taste too sweet. I did try drinking diet mtdew for a while and it gave me horrible foot cramps... there is researching stating diet sodas leech calcium from your body and/or cause you not to absorb it as well - since we already get that with the RNY its really not a good idea to 'chance' it... I think thats why my feet were cramping. IMO soda is ok as a treat on occasion - for every glass of soda you drink you will have to drink an ADDITIONAL glass of water... you do NOT want to replace water with soda. If you follow the current research on diet sodas they are now saying they make you want to eat more and gain weight because of the artifical sweetners - so again, basically ok as a treat not an everyday occurance. As stated above you may find the carbonation hard to handle... even as far out as I am soda will make not cause me any pain but will make me burpy and/or gassy... all that fizz has to go somewhere.

My renal (and diabetic) diet calls for no dark sodas whatsoever.  So, I've been off of them for a long time now.  I was into Diet Mt. Dew and Sierra Mist, but, have found that now that I am on this liquid diet and not eating a ton of salty foods, I am not at all thirsty.  (Which is a good thing!!  Unlike all of you guys, I have to limit fluid intake.)  I think you should start limiting yourself now, so the shock won't hit you so bad after surgery!! Diet Mtn Dew was my addiction as well. *ahhh* the memories....LOL

What I came to realize is that my surgeon said no carbonated beverages EVER after surgery. This was part of my decision making process. I actually said, "Can I live without my Diet Mtn Dew?" When I weighed my options.... Carbonated Bliss or Better Health and Weight loss? It was a no brainer when I thought about it like that.

What I discovered about a month after quitting my Diet Dew was that I didn't miss it nearly as much as I thought I would. It's a sacrifice, but one well worth it for the outcome that we get.

Good luck!

I have always been a huge soda drinker, I could live off regular COKE!!!! then when I met hubby we started buying diet soda ONLY.. I hated it, but then I discovered Coke one and diet Dr. Pepper...every once in awhile I would get a regular coke as a treat. Well a few months ago I was at Disneyworld and watching everyone chug a lug on there sodas... I got a diet coke to keep in my room and it went down REALLY BAD.. I dumped it.. it was my fault because I drank it to fast and yes it HURT. Now I take a sip here and there off hubbies diet sodas but I have not had my own bottle or can since surgery and I do not like the way it makes me feel. I drink a lot of crystal lite but I do get sick of it sometimes LOL

My surgeon said diet soda wasn't an issue after surgery - just no regular soda. I haven't had any problems with diet soda at all - and I lived on diet gingerale for awhile when I was really sick. I wouldn't DREAM of suggesting you do anything against your surgeon's orders - I'm just sharing my experiences.  Seems like all surgeons have different guidelines and there is no one set of best practices - everyone here can tell you how they've done, what they've learned and what their surgeon advocates - but don't be surprised if they sometimes contradict like this one! Best of luck! Nikki
