I used High Protein Boost when I first came home from the hospital with some additional unflavored powdered protein mixed in.   I then discovered Unjury and have never looked back.  You can order small sample packages to give it a try.  It comes in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry sorbet--mixes well with crystal lite for a sherbert like drink,  unflavored and then chicken broth.  They are all good.  You order on line or by phone.  It generally ships the same that day that you order I have mine in two days.  You can also go on auto delivery if you like.   Mixed with 8 oz of skim milk you get around 29 grams of protein per serving.

My stomach seemed a bit sensitive to the protein drinks at first but I just diluted them and things seem to be better. As far as tasting good, I like the Isopure bottled drinks. I like these because they are not the typical "shake" type drink and you can keep it in your glass for the day and just keep adding ice and topping it off through out the day. 1 bottle is 42gr of protein. I have some of the ready to drink Muscle Milks, too sweet for me...I have to cut them down with skim milk. I'm trying the unflavored Unjury today. I ordered the unflavored and some sample sizes of the flavors pre-op. If you go to GNC you can just get a couple of different single serving ready to drink items and try them that way. I did that so I wouldn't invest in a case of something before I was sure of how it was going to go. Good Luck! I'll update ya on the Unjury trial tonight! LOL Wish me luck!

Wendy and amruby's advice about sampling a few protein supplements is excellent, as protein preferences vary among individuals. Before my Lap Band surgery, I purchased the Bariatric Protein Single Scoop Packs from http://www.bariatriceating.com/ulprtapa.html.  The festively packaged beach bag was filled to the brim with all kinds of single-serving protein supplement products, including chai and espresso drinks.  It was such a treat to sample the various smoothies, protein "milks," shakes, and other ways to get protein in. My favorite way to take in extra protein these days is to make 64 oz of Crystal Lite Raspberry Lemonade and dump in one New Whey Liquid Protein Bullet (either blue raspberry or fruit punch, with 42g of protein).  I keep a Nalgene bottle of this little concoction with me throughout the day and it goes a long way to making sure I'm getting my liquids as well as at least 21g of extra protein each day. Of course, sometimes we get sick of something that once delighted us.  So I pick up samples  various stuff whenever I see free samples are available, and then I can reach back into my Bag o' Protein Tricks and find something else that might catch my fancy.

First, I'd love to say hello ... I don't think I've enjoyed meeting you before. Welcome to our board and I look forward to getting to know you over the course of the daysm, months, and years to come as we make this journey together.

I am not a huge fan of most of the protien shakes. The ones that I was able to tolerate best have been AmericanWhey from GNC ... it's not too sweet and the texture is okay. I've also used DesignerWhey that you can get from Trader Joe's, Vitamin Shoppe and I think GNC. I also found some protien bars that were pretty good that I got at the Vitamin Shoppe. They were light and came in some decent flavors ... oh! senior moment! I'll have to see if I can find the name somewhere.

Honestly, I used the shakes during the first several weeks, but switched to 'real food' protien just as soon as possible and haven't looked back.

Do you attend any support groups? Sometimes they will do taste tests. Also, if you live near a Vitamin Shoppe or GNC, they often will let you have samples or you can return items you don't like.

Many people say that their sense of taste changes quite a bit after surgery, so you might want to have some things on hand, but not a great deal. I personally didn't find that to be the case. What I would say is that when you aren't injesting so much sugar, fat and salt, I think your pallate is 'cleansed' and you might not tolerate as much sugar, fat and salt in your diet as you used to.

Wishing you every success,

Barb

I suggest checking out Earth Fare, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Harris Teeter and The Home Economist for protein samples. Everybody has different tastes so you are best off buying samples and seeing what you like and dont like.  Personally I like BioChems 100% Whey Protein, Deisgner Whey, Muscle Milk Light and whatever they use at Smoothie King thats low carb.

I drank the milk choc, sugar free, Carnation Instant Breakfast drink and to me it taste just like chock milk.  It does get boring after a while and they do have Strawberry and French Vanilla, which i just ordered online since the stores don't have it.    As a supplement, I have also ordered protein bullets which are 42 gr of protein in 3 ounces.  They are expensive (about 70 bucks for 24 incl. s/h) but they can help on days when my protein is to low.     Good luck!   Do you have a surgery date? Take care, Pam
