Dr Vollenger is really good - he did surgery on two of my co-workers who were very high risk.  He has a very stringent pre-care plan that really impressed me.  Be forewarned, though - some of his office staff could use some lessons in manners.  Didn't get that at all from the doctor himself though. Good luck!!!!!! Nikki

My husband is military and we have Tricare as well.  I had RNY at Southern Surgical in Greenville as well.  I had Dr. MacDonald.  Southern Surgical is a center of excellent.  That is what the lady at Tricare told me.  I had excellent care, before and after.

Thanks for the info. I currently live in Raleigh and there are few physicians who will accept Tricare.  I guess you were lucky, everytime I call a rep at Tricare, I seem to get the bottom of the class. I've spoke to some one in Medical Management  who was equally as bad. I initially asked for a referral to UNC but after speaking with them, I decided against it.  I called my provider and asked them to send a referral in for Southern Surgical. Hopefully, it will get approved. Did you have to pay any out of pocket monies? UNC wanted a 150.00 application fee.

Did you have to show a 5 year weight record? I spoke with Monica @ Southern Surgical and I set up an appointment for the 17th. She also said that she thought I would require the weight record because most insurances do. I pulled the policy for Tricare and it only had weight requirements plus comorbilities.  Do you remember how long did it take from starting the process to surgery? She esimated that it was 4 months for lap banding and 8 months for RNY.

I did have to have a 5 year weight loss history.  The good thing about that is, every time I went to the doctor, I was weighed.  My doctor just faxed that over to Southern Surgical.  I have seen the same doctor for the last 4 1/2 years.  I did a weight history for myself also.  My doctor did it like a graph chart showing my ups and downs.  So that part was easy.  You may just want to ask your doctor to track your weight for each time you came in.  Most doctors weigh you everytime you come in.  I had RNY and from start to fini**** took about 2 months to get everything done.  I went to the informational in August 2007.  I had my first appointment in September 2007 and I had my surgery on November 2007.  It took Tricare 7 days to approve me for surgery.  Good luck to you.  And if you have any more questions, please ask.  That is what we are here for.
