i am still in the exploring stage of my journey.   i have had my initial education class and i am waiting for my appointments for my evaluations.  my biggest problem will be the out of pocket expenses.  i am curious as to how many of you out there have had success in getting financial assistance through vocational rehabilitation.  i am experiencing medical problems that are causing me to miss wor****assionally.  i am wondering how bad does it have to be for them to help.  has anyone out there gone through this with north carolina dvr?  i do have bcbs, so my obligations will be copayments and deductibles, and the 20% after bcbs pays.  what has your experience been?  are there income limitations with dvr?

They are pretty lenient when it comes to what they cover for obesity help.   My friend's son is going to school through VR totally on a scholarship because of his morbid obesity.  Once he is through school he plans to have WLS again with the help of VR.

As you already know VR covered my surgery costs entirely...plus 6 months of follow-up visits. All I am responsible for is my medication expenses and counceling sessions, which they recommend I continue for 3 visits minimum. VR covered me because my insurance company denied me. Since I did have my PCP and Dr. Harris in my corner and they supplied me with letters stating that this surgery was medically necessary, VR approved me. It took a few months but all in all, seems like it went quickly.      Yes, they do look at your financial situation. I was not working at all, so that benefited my situation. They required hubby's most recent 3 pay stubs, but they never checked bank records, mortgage payments, etc.      It's an odd thing to say, but I was lucky to be in pretty bad physical shape from my obesity. They look at all that. I have arthritis in my left ankle, lower back, hips, sleep apnea, HAD high BP.  Obviously the more comorditities, the better chance to get approval. My councelor at VR told me they are covering WLS more and more these days. Maybe they will help with whatever BCBS doesn't pay. If you make too much money, your OOP with VR will be higher. I doesn't hurt to make an appointment to chat with someone. I found them VERY easy to talk to and they were willing to help me in whatever way they could...and they did.      Let me know how things go. Mare
