Ok so I am gonna use this forum to the fullest ... I feel so dumb sometimes. But anyways..... the doc told me to start on low carb high protein for next 2 wks before surgery. Anyone got any ideas what is a good low carb count and what is a good high protein count?

Well. Meat and cheese will be your friends. Meats of course will be high protein. Be careful with ham though because sometimes it is cured with sugar. All you need to do is read the carb count on the package. Ideas for what to eat because it does get boring: chicken salad, tuna salad, egg salad. eggs anyway you like them, pepperoni, hamburger, turkey, hot dogs, stea**** sausage, bacon, pork chops, chicken, fish, shrimp. Jimmy Dean has a great omlet in the freezer section for breakfast. I've also been enjoying Atkins drinks like slim fast (15g of protein). You can have green beans, lettuce and pickles. Eating out I would get buffalo bites from Bojangles or grilled chicken sandwiches and throw away the bread. Hope this helps. :) The time will go by quickly. Just try not eating the same thing two days in a row and it will help alleviate the boredom. :) Becky

One of my biggest problems with the low-carb thing was that I wanted/needed food that was easy to "take along."  For those things I gravitated towards string cheese, nuts and beef jerky (make sure to check the package...some marinades are high in carbs, but there are plenty out there that are good.) Just a few more suggestions!  :)

First, you probably need to check with your Dr's office and/or the nutrionist that they use because there so many different protocols. That being said, most will want you to be on a program that has a minimum of 40 grams of protien, with an average of 60 to 80 grams of protien. The carb counts are usually pretty low, in the 20 - 30 grams per day area and follow something similar to an Atkins or South Beach type program.

Probably one of the best bets here on OH will be hitting the Nutrition and Diet forum. The moderators on that board are Dieticians and are very good about giving general information. You might also consider x-posting to the main forum and the rny forum. Often when you do this you will get enough people to look at what you are posting to a get a variety of answers. I'd follow up though with your Dr's office to be sure that it's what they have in mind.

Hope this helps some.

P.S. Great to see you jumping in with both feet!

:-) This too shall pass, but it might take a while. This is such a huge undertaking, physically, psychologically and emotionally that we need all the help and support we can get and right now you need a lot. It's normal. Evenutally, it will balance out.

A few more thoughts ...

Post surgery you are going to probably have more carbs than you will later on, because most of the protien shakes/drinks have a higher carb content. Your Dr's office will give you guidelines on that.

Once you start eating real food again ... and when/how that happens varies from program to program ... you will find that while 20 to 30 grams of carbs sound seriously restrictive, once you eat your protien and complex carbs, i.e., fruits and vegi's, you really aren't going to have much room for carbs as a whole. Sooooo...as you venture into this new way of eating, it's not really going to be so very hard to keep the carbs down. It takes a little getting used to, but it's definitely doable ... and that is coming from a very serious carb addict. ;-)
