OT: Crazy week (long story)

Just thought I would post about the crazy week I have had. My SO noticed his big toe turning black and blue about a week and a half ago. I urged him to go to his PCP, whom he never goes to. He is one of those men that doesn't take care of his medical needs. Has that addage if it ain't broke.....but then doesn't know if it's broke truthfully. Anyhow, Sat. he finally went to an urgent care type of place. They say he should come back Monday and they will make an order for some testing. Doc says he maybe could lose his toe. He goes back Monday and sees a new doc and he gives him a shot of antibiotic and send him on his way. Says maybe an infection. They say he can go in for an angiogram, I believe that was the test, on the 15th. He calls me and I tell him go straight to your PCP and he is quite angry but goes. PCP cant see him that day but says come in tomorrow. Goes in Tuesday and PCP tells him this is serious. Go get that test STAT and I want you to see a vascular surgeon, but the one on his plan is out of town till Wednesday. He goes in Wed.at 3:15 to the vascular surgeon and he checks pulse at ankle and at top of leg and says we have to go now. Straight to the hospital for emergency surgery. Doc. says he would have lost his leg or died. There was no circulation at all.So Wednesday night he had a stint put in the iliac artery in the abdomen area. His doctor said his toe will probably be sore for months but it should heal. Unfortunately he saw another doc for follow-up since his surgeon had to leave yesterday for Phoenix...hence another reason for the urgent surgery. This doc said he may still lose the toe, but we are hoping the other surgeon is more accurate. He is home right now and resting. I know some lifestyle changes are coming. PAD or PVD is what this is and he is only 44. He is a smoker who will HAVE to quit. Quite a dangerous habit. One I am so greatful I never chose to do. I do sympathize since I know it is addictive. (I can relate to having an addictive personality). Anyhow, thanks for letting me share. Say your prayers for him. This has been quite stressful but at least we got him under the knife in time. Hopefully he can manage this disease and become proactive with his health. Something we all must do.  Lisa

Oh my Gosh Lisa, what a scary week!  You were right to encourage him to keep seeking more care, it ended up saving his life!  Wow.  It sounds like he's in for a lot of changes, but having you in his life should help.  At least you lead a healthy lifestyle, so now that's something else that you two can focus on together!  Best of luck as he recovers, I'll definitely pray that nothing else goes wrong and he is able to keep the toe.

Oh MY Lisa this is some scarry stuff. Dealing with men when they are ill is very difficult. If they do not like doctors to begin with makes it even harder. I hope this is his wake up call. Lee had a stint put in 8 years ago and is doing well with it along with several heart meds.                                                Annie I hope to see you at meetup in March Big Hug

It is never too late to be what you might have been.?

Lisa -

OMGoodness!!! I'm so sorry to hear that he isn't doing well, but I'm so glad that you are there for him. I'll be he is too! I hope that he'll be able to see this as a wake-up call and do what he needs to do to take care of himself.

I hope things smooth out soon.

Hugs,

Barb
