Bad breath?

So I've heard that chronic halitosis is a major concern from Bariatric surgery because of the way that food is digested. I know this may sound like a personal question (you can PM me if you feel more comfortable talking about it) but I would really like to know if anyone has had this to deal with. Thanks!

I think that what is being referred to is the bad breath caused by ketosis early on from an almost exclusively protein diet.  The low carbs will put your body into a state of ketosis and the ketones will show up in your breath.  It is kind of a sickly sweet smell, not unlike nail polish remover.  Sort of.  It does go away as your carb intake increases and really is manageable with sugar free gum and mints.

I was just talking to Annie about this today... I'm about 7 weeks out and i brush my teeth 4-5 times a day because my mouth always feels so dirty and i feel like my breath is so bad.  Now, my husband tells me it's my imagination...but i know that my breath is not normal at this point.  I'll just keep eating mints, chewing gum and brushing teeth until this is over... i'm hoping it will get over, anyway

Bath and Body Works sells this fantastic lip balm that doubles as a breathe freshener!!  It was a life saver for me in the hosp.  Just apply it to your lips.  You can also put a dab on your tongue to freshen your breathe when you need it.  It's wonderful, but kinda pricey!  $7.50 a tube.  Its a larger than average tube, but still pricey for lip balm!   Andrea

Are you talking about the C.O. Bigelow Mentha Lip Shine line? If so, good news --it's on sale for $5! I'll have to check it out!

Andrea, As Suzanne said we are in a state of Ketosis. I showed Judy these Listerine strips I carry with me. My mouth usally has a bad taste so before go in  public I am always popping my strips.                                               Annie

Thanks for the info... I'm going to try it.  I'm getting really neurotic about this!

Suzanne is on the money. While is might be a very short-term issue for some, it's definitely not a longterm issue and not one that would prevent me from doing this again. It falls in the same category with possible BO problems that can occur from the same ketosis process. It's short-lived and manageable.

Hope that helps,

Barb
