From my exp with BCBS AL they require a 6 month supervised diet that can not be supervised via your bariatric surgeon. It's best to do it through it your PCP. Best of luck!

I just received approval for lap RNY last week. I had to have a six month diet history which actually includes an initial visit, then six monthly followup visits. After submittal I had approval in 3 weeks. The official line is that they have 30-45 days to complete the medical review. After you send in your paperwork, call the customer service representatives to be certain they have received and logged into the system (took about 4 days for me). That way you will know when your days start to count. I found customer service to be very helpful and I was a pest. Teresa

Thanks, this whole situation has been frustrating because I have Aetna now but will change to BCBSAL Jan 1, so I have been following there criteria since July.  So luckly I have already been seeing my PCP every month since then. So Im hopin January 1 they will be ready to submit my paper work.

Hello! I too have BCBC of AL and have been denied twice.  I have five co-morbidities (they require two) and have had a BMI of 41 (they require 35 with co-morbidities).  Several attempts at weight loss lowered me under the 35 BMI briefly.  They denied me because I did not have a consistent BMI of 35 during the entire time.  I cannot wrap my brain around their logic.  The attempts at weight loss prove why I need this surgery b/c I can't keep the weight off, I always gain it back. I am scheduled for WLS on Tues (11/20) and am self paying.  I am not going to let some strangers at my insurance company make my medical decisions for me.  (Even if I have to sell my car).  After I'm better, I am going to hire an attorney and fight them.   I wish you the best of luck and hopefully you will not have the same problems that I have.
