Thanksgiving ...

I've been thinking about Thanksgiving this year. I have so much for which to be thankful, namely my health.

I've also been trying to figure out what to do this year re: Thanksgiving dinner. As many of you know, I'm a transplant from the SF Bay Area. When we lived there I hosted Thanksgiving dinner for all my extended family and some friends that totalled somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 people, +/- a few. When we moved here, it was pretty lonely until we met some friends who have invited us to join them for the past few years. At any rate, I'm not sure if we will be joining them or not this year and while we have gone out for dinner in the past, I had to spend $35 or 40 on a meal that I'll hardly be able to eat. It seems almost a waste to cook a big dinner just for my husband, daughter and I. Any ideas for those who normally go out for Thanksgiving dinner?

I understand what you are talking about Barb, Why cook a huge meal that only Sarah and your hubby can enjoy I second the motion to go out. In Chapel Hill there are some good places to go. You need to make reservations NOW. The first one is The Carolina Inn and the second one is The Seinna Hotel (sp) Personally as long as there is a buffet setting I am happy because I can pick and choose. We are going to Grandfather mountain to be with my family and having dinner at a country club that has a buffett.                                          Annie

It is never too late to be what you might have been.?

Hey Barb you might want to check on the newsobserver.com website.  Look under the blogs, Epicurean and Greg Cox has posted a list of restaurants in the area that will be open for Thanksgiving.  I was looking at it yesterday and there are some really nice places that are open, surprisingly.  It kinda makes me want to skip all the hub-bub and go out to eat with just my husband and daughter....

We cooked chicken one year instead of Turkey.  It was a nice change and we are always Turkied-out by Christmas anyway.  :D Cornish hens would be a good meal too..  I just saw some in my freezer that may make it to my dinner table soon.  :D

If we stay home, it just might be the thing.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, I was thinking Cornish hens as well.  But I love turkey leftovers.  Turkey salad is so good!  And there are so many meals you can make with the leftovers.  Maybe a small turkey would meet your needs and still satisfy that "urge" that comes over us to memorialize those holidays.

Barb, I'm in a dilemma also, and think I have it solved.  Usually we go to Mom's in Charlotte and come back.  This year, since my Son moved out, I'm not in the mood for much of anything.  The outlets in SMithfield are having a BIG sale the eve of THanksgiving starting at 9:30, they will have like 30 vendors.  Yankee candle is having the big size candles 4 for $40.  I am dragging DH up there at 7 ish, eat at Cracker Barrell, they have a good Thanksgiving meal and I can take home the leftovers.  He's not that enthused about the drive but he want's turkey, lol. Sounds like fun ... I understand what you mean about not being in the mood when you are missing your kids.

I hope that you have a nice time.

Let me know if you find anything wonderful.
